"It will be a space closely linked to the activity carried out in the Artillery Barracks, which will allow young people to develop artistic, creative and training activities as well as exchange knowledge and experiences," said Jesús PachecoEspacio XXI is born, the first young space for the neighborhoods of South Connection.
The Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, and the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, accompanied by the coordinator of the Artillery Barracks, Jesús de la Peña, the person in charge of youth participation, Francisco Manuel Reverte, and by Students and teachers of the IES El Carmen, have presented this morning this project that will aim to promote the integral development of young people, through their creativity and talent."Murcia Conexion Sur revolves around people and laying the foundations for the growth of these neighborhoods.
The creation of this new open and inclusive space from which the talent, creativity and personal and professional development of young people will be projected will be one of the most significant actions within this great project ", explained Rebeca Pérez. The essential characteristic of Espacio XXI is that it will be created through a citizen laboratory project in which the young people themselves will be the ones who - together with municipal culture and youth technicians - actively propose and define the distribution of the space and its programming, getting involved also in the management and coordination of activities.Space XXI will be located in Pavilion 1 of the Artillery Barracks and one of the criteria that young people themselves have already set as a requirement is that it be a young space especially linked to creativity and the development of talent.
In addition, it was born with the vocation of being a permeable space where people of all ages and different groups mix."It will be a space closely linked to the activity carried out in the Artillery Barracks itself, which will provide young people with the necessary tools so that they can develop artistic, creative and training activities as well as exchange knowledge and experiences.
It will also become a showcase for that they can show their work to the rest of Murcia, "said councilor Jesús Pacheco.Participation process designed by young peopleDuring 3 months, the young promoters of the project will design and develop together with the municipal technicians a participation process, to configure the space that best suits their needs and concerns and in which the involvement of all the students of the 8 institutes in the Murcia area South Connection: IES Saavedra Fajardo (Infante), IES Ingeniero de la Cierva (Barrio del Progreso), IES Ramón y Cajal (Los Dolores), IES Mariano Baquero Goyanes (Santiago el Mayor), IES El Carmen and IES Floridablanca (El Carmen), and the Herma (El Carmen) and Gabriel Pérez Cárcel (Infante) schools. For the development of the project, the involvement of the youth correspondents who collaborate from the institutes with the Youth Council will be essential. The initial proposals for the development of the participation process will include making video selfies with contributions through Instagram, contests and surveys through Kahoot and the participation of young people through the fashion social network TikTok and others.
formats close to the tastes and interests of young people.Councilor Rebeca Pérez explained that "Espacio XXI was born to become a new field of reflection and analysis aimed at young people in the city of Murcia in general and in the neighborhoods and districts of South Connection, in particular.
A place that they identify as their own where to relate, in which they can actively participate and in which they formulate proposals and alternatives for action, through constructive dialogue and the search for coincidences.Origin and characteristics of the Espacio XXI projectThe Espacio XXI project has its origin in a collaborative documentary developed by IES El Carmen students in 2017, directed by the Fine Arts teacher Anna Borisova. In this documentary, the young people proposed that Pavilion 1 of the Artillery Barracks be rehabilitated so that it could house a meeting point for young people, a youth space open to integrate culture and society.Among the characteristics that they already proposed that the space have, it was found that it was a very diverse place in the sociocultural field, where young people, adults and the elderly coexisted. Also that it had a strong link with culture and creativity, a space that could have activities on cinema, theater, photography, where professionals could give talks, training courses or share experiences. Finally, it could be a meeting point, a place of stay, joy and fun, where you can watch movies, listen to music or do teamwork."Three years later, not only have the barracks pavilions been rehabilitated, but the young people themselves are the ones who are going to make the space they dreamed of a reality," said councilor Rebeca Pérez.A reference place of South Connection for young peopleThis new infrastructure will be the reference of South Connection as a place of exchanges between young people.
Within this framework, an important activity consisting of the design and programming of multiple youth activities will be promoted where it is possible to know the concerns and interests of the participants. In addition, Espacio XXI will promote access to information by providing tools and supports that allow them to fully exercise their rights and duties.
On the other hand, it is expected to foster new discussions on topics of common interest, creating a source of resources that will serve to strengthen the development of cultural projects focused on promoting Murcian talent. In this way, "Espacio XXI also approaches the idea that young people should be the true interlocutors, active subjects of decision-making to define how they want their city to be, thus being triggers of initiatives and coordinators of projects", Councilor Rebeca Pérez has finished.More than 70,000 neighbors will design their environmentThis action is part of the participatory process of the Murcia South Connection project that will allow citizens to transfer proposals to the plan and propose improvements that can be made in their territories. The more than 70,000 residents of these areas will be the protagonists and those in charge of transforming their own environment and they will do so through different mechanisms and tools.
