| The balance of infections and cases of close contact of COVID in the UMU confirms that no outbreak has been detected in the institution | The University of Murcia will present more than 20 ambitious proposals to obtain European funding within the framework of the 'Next Generation EU'.
These initiatives, which have been presented this Friday by José Antonio Cascales, manager of the UMU, in the Governing Council of the institution, aim to help energize the Region of Murcia by recovering the economy, improving employment, digitization and sustainability. The proposals of the University of Murcia, outlined with the collaboration of the different vice-chancellors, are initiatives that have been worked on since September 2019.
These European Union funds represent a new possibility for obtaining funding, since the proposed initiatives are fully aligned with the object and objectives of said funds.
The twenty initiatives of the University of Murcia have been grouped into 3 major transformative projects for the University and the Region: iCAMPUS 2030, UMU DIGITAL and Research and Development.
Together, the three projects add up to a request for funding of 295 million euros. The most ambitious of these great plans is that of the iCampus 2030 Project, through which the transformation of Spanish university campuses into holistic, resilient and interconnected environments through artificial intelligence and digitization is intended.
The project develops 7 lines of action that will revolve around three strategic axes (green transition, comprehensive digitization and transformation into green and adaptive environments).
Its development and start-up would mean increasing the capacity for self-consumption of renewable energy on university campuses, reducing energy demand, developing digital applications and services, generating employment and new business models with an impact on the local economy. The Digital University block includes initiatives aimed at continuing to improve the applications for the digitization of electronic administration at the University of Murcia and online training in different areas. Lastly, the initiatives of the Research and Development block include very diverse initiatives such as the construction of a state-of-the-art laboratory in the field of optics and photonics with applications in green energy and biomedicine; a personalized medicine zebrafish unit offering its services in the biomedical field to both research groups and hospitals; the creation of an institute of technologies for assisted reproduction; and the creation of a platform for monitoring the Mar Menor based on the internet of things; among other proposals.
Furthermore, among the extensive list of initiatives, the presentation of a plan to improve mobility in the city of Murcia also stands out. These works, aimed at defining strategic projects with high added value, are a natural consequence of the experience of the University of Murcia in attracting and managing European funds in recent years.
An example is the Hercules Project: University Research Data Semantics (5.5 million euros), a project promoted by CRUE and led by the University of Murcia, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation; or the recently launched Project Tic2: Thinking Infrastructures in Campus and Cities (7.2 million euros) in collaboration with the Autonomous Community and the CDTI. COVID balance On the other hand, the Governing Council has heard the report of the Vice-Rector for Students and Services to the University Community, Paloma Sobrado, on the evolution of the pandemic in the institution. Specifically, the Vice Chancellor has reported that since the beginning of the course, 34 positive cases of COVID have been reported to the University of Murcia by staff of the institution, both teachers and administration and services personnel; as well as 233 positives among the students.
Likewise, 44 cases of personnel isolated by direct contact with a positive and 359 close contacts with positives among the students have been reported.
Around 30,000 people study at the University of Murcia and the workforce is close to 4,000 workers. With regard to staff, close contacts have occurred in common areas (work, dining room, laboratories) and in social contacts and none of them have been reported to have subsequently tested positive.
In the case of the student group, the close contacts have mainly taken place outside the UMU spaces, these are social contacts in flats, leisure areas and families / partners.
Of all those produced, 30 close contacts have been reported, which have subsequently become positive.
