The City Council advances in the application of the 215 measures that will reduce polluting emissions by 40% by 2030 (05/11/2020)

The Councilor for Sustainable Development, Antonio Navarro, has inaugurated the Evaluation Day of the Climate Change Mitigation Plan of the Municipality of Murcia in which the actions collected by the strategies developed by the Government Team have been analyzedThe Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, has inaugurated this morning the Evaluation Day of the Climate Change Mitigation Plan of the Municipality of Murcia, in which a dozen municipal organizations have gathered, which have been divided into two working groups, one that has addressed mitigation measures and another that has evaluated adaptation measures.Specifically, the services of Sports, Tourism, Heritage, Traffic and Transport, Social Welfare, Environment, Urbanism, Education, the Municipal Tax Agency, the Department of Industrial Engineering and the ALEM, which is the coordinating body of the journey that has been carried out.During the meeting, an analysis was carried out on the application of the 143 measures that include the 7 lines of action that structure the Municipal Strategy for Climate Change of the Municipality of Murcia, whose main objective is to obtain a 40% decrease in emissions of greenhouse gases that are produced in the regional capital.The mayor Antonio Navarro explained that "compliance with the lines of action in which we are working will allow us to achieve energy savings of 27% and will enhance the local production of renewable energy sources to contribute to the improvement of the environment and mitigate the effects in our municipality of climate change ".The Strategy includes specific actions to act on municipal buildings and facilities, residential buildings, buildings and non-municipal tertiary facilities and to promote the local production of renewable energy.Improved transport and awareness campaignsIt will also address the improvement of transport and the realization of specific awareness and training campaigns to create awareness among citizens of the need to reduce pollution in the Murcian municipality.Regarding the Adaptation Strategy, it focuses on the risks that appear associated with the decrease in rainfall, drought, heat waves and the general increase in temperatures.

Until 2030 the Strategy includes 11 goals and 61 measures that revolve around 4 strategic objectives.One of the objectives is to promote the development and implementation of a planning model for the municipality of Murcia that is consensual, integrated, balanced and resilient to climate change.

Another line of work is preparing society for the risks derived from the effects of climate change.Pilot projects to improve municipal managementLikewise, the City Council will lead the integration of pilot projects of good practices that are innovative and that serve as an example of what climate change adaptation means in municipal management.

In addition, there will be a firm commitment to the conservation of Murcia's biodiversity and its ecosystem services.The services involved in the management and application of these strategies will work to moderate, reduce or avoid the damage caused by extreme weather in natural and urban systems.The Government Team has carried out this review of the implementation status of actions to mitigate climate change in compliance with the requirements established by the Covenant of Mayors, to which the Murcia City Council adhered in 2008.
