UCAM publishes a protocol for the proper use of school bags (04/11/2020)

The Sports Traumatology Chair, directed by doctors Pedro Guillén and José Luis Martínez Romero, has issued a report prepared by the Group of Child Orthopedics and Traumatology, coordinated by doctor Juan José López, which includes eleven recommendations to avoid back problems . The main cause of sick leave and the most common pain is low back pain; 40% of the world population suffers or has suffered frequently from back pain, both cervical, dorsal or lumbar.

To avoid ailments from an early age and educate in healthy habits, the Group of Child Orthopedics and Traumatology of the UCAM Department of Sports Traumatology has carried out a study on the proper use of school backpacks. The protocol assumes that "it is preferable from the medical point of view to use backpacks instead of trolleys, since these cause an asymmetric load when pulling only with one arm".

Based on this recommendation, eleven recommendations are detailed: The backpack must carry a load not exceeding 10% of body weight. The straps should be wide and padded and should be kept the same length on both sides.

Similarly, the part of the backpack that fits the back should be padded. An anterior fastening strap at the pectoral level is advisable, to give greater stability. The backpack should always be about 5 cm above the buttocks, it should never be long and hitting the buttock area with each step, since it favors lumbar hyperlordosis and dorsal kyphosis; not advisable for the development of the spine. The backpack should never be carried over one shoulder. The use of backpacks with narrow straps or shoulder straps is not recommended. The distribution of the weights in the backpack is important.

The heaviest items (books) should be in the lowest area of ??the backpack and as close to the back as possible, and as they are lighter they can be placed higher. It is advisable that the schoolchild always carry the backpack, not parents, grandparents or caregivers.

It is the responsibility of the scholar. As far as possible, educational centers are advised to promote the use of lockers to reduce the weights transferred. Sport should be encouraged at all ages.

Playing sports on a regular basis strengthens the general level and prepares the body for greater loads with less risk of injury. In the event that the schoolchild suffers any discomfort or pain that is longer than usual, it should be evaluated by a specialist in pediatric orthopedics and trauma.
