Murcia analyzes in a Eurocities digital seminar the importance of digital tools for citizen participation (31/10/2020)

| Councilor Mercedes Bernabé intervenes this week in the forum 'Inclusion and digital participation: How can cities guarantee them?' | The councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, has intervened this week at the tenth digital seminar of Eurocities, the main network of European cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants, under the name 'Inclusion and digital participation: How can cities guarantee them? ', focused on analyzing the need for digital tools to promote citizen participation."Neighbors increasingly demand to collaborate in processes that contribute to the development of their environment, so the administrations must listen to them and help them to be actively involved by making the appropriate tools available to them," said the mayor. Thus, representatives of different countries of the European Union have met with a common objective: to highlight the importance of the opinion of citizens for the development of the territories, as well as the implementation of actions that guarantee the inclusion of rights digital for every European citizen. As an example, during her speech, the mayor recalled some of the participation actions carried out by the council, such as the Urban DNA initiative, recognized at European level as an example of good practice for the regeneration and revitalization of neighborhoods. In addition, representatives from Glasgow also spoke to share their vision on digital inclusion and how to improve this competence for all citizens. In short, Mercedes Bernabé highlighted "the need for all the inhabitants of Europe to play a leading and active role in building the future of our union, for which it is essential to encourage participation from the local level."Likewise, the five principles of citizen participation promoted by Eurocities with the aim of creating a better society capable of responding to society's most urgent social challenges were highlighted. In this way, the former argues that greater collaboration is essential to strengthen democracy; the second highlights the importance of shared efforts between governments, civil society and other local actors; the third focuses on the role of citizens to propose solutions for their daily life; the fourth emphasizes the value of confidence to achieve success; and the fifth in the capacity of administrations to adapt to changes and transformations.
