It will take place from 8:00 p.m., coinciding with the International Day of the Fight against Poliomyelitis | The City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration headed by José Guillén, joins this initiative in order to give visibility to those affected by this disease.This initiative is led by Rotary International and the Clubs of the Region of Murcia.
It will take place from 8:00 p.m., coinciding with the International Day of the Fight against Poliomyelitis. Different enclaves of the city of Murcia will be dyed red today; emblematic spaces that will be, in particular, the riverbed, the Almudí Palace, the Moneo Building and the pedestrian axis of Alfonso X El Sabio.The date chosen is a tribute and celebration to the birth of Jonas Salk, the American researcher who made possible the development of the vaccine that managed to prevent this disease.It is an initiative that is carried out at the request of the three Rotary clubs in the city: Rotary Club Murcia, Rotary Club Murcia Norte and Rotary Club Murcia University.Since Rotary International set out to fight polio in 1985, cases have fallen by 99.99% in the world, from more than 350,000 cases a year to less than 50 in just three countries in the world: Afghanistan, Pakistan.
In August this year, the World Health Organization certified that the African continent was polio-free after more than three decades of effort.
