The Murcian student Sergio Hernández Agón is this year's winner of the National Phase of the 2020 Geology Olympics, held on September 27 and in which the 80 students with the best results of the territorial phases competed.
Sergio Hernández, a high school student at IES Ricardo Ortega de Fuente Álamo, was the second classified in the regional phase, organized by the University of Murcia. The national final was held virtually due to the socio-sanitary situation and was structured in two tests: the first was a theoretical-practical test type and included 50 questions and the second, a practical course.
The winner of the test will receive a cash prize of one thousand euros, as well as a geological kit. Since the territorial phases, nearly 3,400 students from 360 centers across the country have competed in this Olympiad. These Olympics are organized by the Spanish Association for the Teaching of Earth Sciences (AEPECT) with the support of the Geological Society of Spain (SGE), the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), the Faculty of Geological Sciences from the UCM, the Illustrious Official College of Geologists (ICOG), the CEPSA Foundation, the Association of Spanish Petroleum Geologists and Geophysicists (AGGEP) and REPSOL-YP.
It also has the collaboration of the Conference of Deans of Geology, GEOSEN, the Santillana Group, the University of Alcalá and the Higher Technical School of Mining and Energy Engineers.
