| This initiative aims, based on better governance, to increase the capacity for innovation in the blue bioeconomy | The University of Murcia is part of the strategic project on innovation B-Blue (Building the blue biotechnology community in the Mediterranean) that has recently been funded by the Interreg Med program within priority axis 4, (improvement of governance in the Mediterranean) to increase innovation capacity in the blue bioeconomy, especially by promoting better governance of innovation policies at European, national and regional level. The head of the International and European Research Projects Office OPERUM and member of the UMU research team, Antonio Skarmeta, comments that 10 partners with experience in the field of Blue Bioeconomy from 8 Mediterranean countries and more than 300 'stakeholders' (universities, research centers, public authorities, business support organizations and multilateral organizations of the Mediterranean) to work together for 22 months (in the creation of a community on Blue Biotechnology in the Mediterranean and innovation). The exploitation of marine bio-resources through biotechnological solutions, and with the help of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), is a field with enormous potential for innovation and economic growth.
This area is a relatively young discipline, so a collaboration and union of the main actors in the sector is key to increase their capacity for innovation and their coordination in order to promote the innovation potential on the ground through joint transnational initiatives, in those that also involve organizations from the southern coast of the Mediterranean. In this sense, B-Blue intends to create a transnational coordination framework based on an inclusive approach (five-fold helix) and work towards the application of a transnational coordination mechanism to improve public-private collaboration on Blue Biotechnology through the creation of a digital platform and a Mediterranean Network that serves as a space for collaboration.
B-Blue also has as a collaborator associated with the general direction of Scientific Research and Innovation of the Autonomous Community of Murcia.
