Councilor Enrique Lorca proposes to call a public contest that is evaluated by people of recognized scientific prestige in medieval archeology. For the PSOE, the Monteagudo archaeological site is a great opportunity for the municipality of Murcia for tourism and economic development.
"But for this the work carried out in the archaeological excavations has to be rigorous and continuous," claims socialist councilor Enrique Lorca. The mayor presents to the next plenary session in July a motion in which he proposes to carry out an archaeological and architectural diagnosis of the Monumental Complex of Monteagudo-Cabezo de Torres and to convene a public contest urgently "that takes into account, among other aspects, experience and trajectory of the different teams presented and that it be evaluated by people with recognized scientific prestige in medieval archeology "reports Lorca. From the Municipal Socialist Group, we consider the archaeological site of Monteagudo essential for the municipality, "is the great opportunity to add to our municipality a new attraction that will help consolidate Murcia as a tourist destination.
The heritage value of this site is immense.
The king Lobo, made Murcia the capital of his state and transformed it into one of the most important cities in the Muslim West, endowing it with a large number of palaces and fortifications, among which this complex stands out.
It is a jewel for our history that we must protect ", says Lorca. The PSOE is committed to giving a boost to the excavation and study of its archaeological site from the base.
"The archaeologists of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), supported by students from different universities, have been working since the summer of 2018 and during the month of October last year.
In this period of time, the findings have been continuous, highlighting a royal palace presided over by a palatine pool (135m2) associated with a large cruise garden, a monumental complex whose configuration only has the antecedent of the Cordoba palaces and gardens of Medina Azahara, "reports Enrique Lorca.
However, the excavations are currently totally paralyzed.
"Not only are they stopped, but they are in a state of evident neglect and also, there are contradictory information about which entity and how these excavations are going to be directed, "regrets the councilor. "As public servants that we are, the money that is invested in this and in all the projects of the Murcia City Council must seek maximum excellence and this must be done through scientific teams of proven experience and track record.
That is what we propose through this motion.
We cannot continue allowing Ballesta and his team this sloppiness ", concludes Lorca.
