The rector of the UMU asks the Assembly for a greater commitment to research to face COVID (23/07/2020)

José Luján has revealed before the commission that prepares the economic and social recovery plan due to the impact of the coronavirus that "the countries with the most advanced educational systems are those that have best known how to face the challenges of the pandemic" The rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, spoke this Thursday at the Regional Assembly, before the special study commission on the economic and social reactivation plan to evaluate the impact of the coronavirus in the Region of Murcia, to transmit the vision of the institution before said plan.

Luján has focused his intervention on the need for a greater commitment to investment in research and education as tools to deal with the virus and its socio-economic consequences. "The recovery requires more investment in science and technology.

The exit from the crisis should be an opportunity to strengthen research policy," said the president, who added that this commitment "should also strengthen our transfer function, not only from knowledge to the economic-productive and business fabric, but largely from the transfer of science and culture to society.

" In this sense, Luján recalled that universities are the first agents of research and innovation in Spain and has pointed out as a sign of this potential that the University of Murcia, through IMIB, is already working on several first-rate projects to carry out in front of COVID-19. Before the commission, Luján has also defended the importance of education as an essential factor in social and economic recovery.

Thus, he reported that during this pandemic it has been possible to see "how the most advanced educational systems have best managed to face the challenges of all kinds of the pandemic." For this reason, the rector has affirmed that "from the University of Murcia we insist on the need to support public education as an engine for promotion and social promotion"; since "the best investment to get out of poverty is quality public education". Luján explained that this idea has guided decision-making within the institution since the start of the pandemic, with the aim that no student could have their career affected by economic or other causes as a result of COVID-19.

The adaptation of study and evaluation systems, the provision of computer resources, direct aid to pay tuition for the 'No student behind' program, the increase in social aid and the maintenance of public prices are some of the measures developed. The University, therefore, "can and must assume a leading role in improving health protection, economic recovery, and the reduction and elimination of inequalities." On the other hand, the rector of the University of Murcia has opined that, given the current situation, it will be necessary to reinforce the endowment of human and material resources available to the Murcian Health Service; as well as making decisions regarding the modernization of the regional production model, the correction of deficits in infrastructure and the strengthening of the tourism sector.

In the rector's opinion, "these known weaknesses of our economic model have been highlighted by the pandemic and, therefore, justify once again the need to design and implement stimulus, promotion and promotion policies" that lead to this modernization of the model productive.
