The PSOE denounces that in the municipality of Murcia there are still 56 Francoist streets 13 years after its prohibition (17/07/2020)

Councilor Juan Vicente Larrosa affirms that "the law is strictly observed for what matters.

It is incredible that practically 13 years have passed since a rule was passed that prohibited streets with Francoist names and that there are still 56 in our municipality." The Municipal Socialist Group in the Murcia City Council will take a motion to the next Plenary to convene the Advisory Committee for the Denomination of Streets of Murcia and Pedanías in order to eliminate all the streets of the municipality of Murcia with Francoist denominations.

"More than 13 years ago, the law of historical memory was approved and in the municipality we still have 56 streets that refer to military positions and dates of the Civil War or the Franco dictatorship.

This only denotes the lack of seriousness and commitment with which the PP government takes this law, "denounces the socialist councilor Juan Vicente Larrosa. "Wanting is power, and in this case the PP governments have shown that historical memory only serves to remind them of Alfonso X El Sabio or the Council of Murcia.

At certain periods in our history it is clear that they turn a deaf ear," he says.

Larrosa. There have been many times that the Municipal Socialist Group has denounced this situation, "without going any further, just a year ago we fully presented a motion in this regard.

We asked for a catalog to be drawn up that would include the Francoist vestiges that still remain in the municipality of Murcia.

" remembers the councilman.

"From the opposition we do everything possible to enforce compliance with the law, they forget that we are not asking for anything more than that, that the law is complied with, and that the municipality of Murcia is free from references to a dictatorial period and undemocratic that should not have a place on our street map.

But Ballesta and his team keep turning their eyes the other way, "protests Larrosa. "Removing these names from our streets is important, it means recognizing that we live in a dictatorial, undemocratic stage, which we should not praise, but rather know and study so as not to repeat again.

On many occasions we are reproached that what we are looking for is to reopen wounds, but all we want is to end a stage that should already be closed.

Pretending as if it never existed will not benefit us as a society, "says Larrosa. "We are fed up with the sterile promises of Ballesta.

We are not going to allow the PP to continue to ignore Murcia and Murcia with this issue.

Although it hurts to change some of those plates, they are going to have to," concludes the councilman.
