| Maribel Marco, one of the two winners, shoots the 'Saturated' film project in Murcia, a story set during confinement | The New Filmmakers 2020 call, organized by the Vice-Rector's Office for Culture with the collaboration of the Unit for Equality of the University of Murcia, has already started the first of its filming in Murcia after more than a month of laborious pre-production.
This is an innovative initiative thanks to which the two winning projects receive production support, technical means and comprehensive advice so that the scripts can materialize in professionally finished cinematographic works. In this second edition, the most optimistic forecasts have been exceeded, with the reception of 39 projects by women filmmakers from the entire Region of Murcia with a high level of quality, well above the 14 received in 2019.
The jury for this edition has counted with prestigious personalities and a solid professional career such as Esther Baeza, director of the Cartagena International Film Festival or Nuria Cánovas, actress and acting teacher, as well as expert in audiovisual narrative Gabriel Ferreras, professor at the University of Murcia. The winning projects this year have been 'Cinquillo' by Inés Muñoz and 'Saturada' by Maribel Marco.
The latter is the first to have started filming.
Its author, the Yeclana Maribel Marco, explains that "it is important that there be this type of contest so that we can take a step and launch our script in the hope of winning, but with the pride of having taken the step of sending it." In this line, the filmmaker points out: "For me, of course, it has been a great joy to be able to be part of this project and feel the support, not only of the people around me, but also of the University and the jury that chose my For the next few years, I encourage all women who want to join this sector to write and send their script, because we all have the opportunity to stand out.
" The filming took place over two intense days in the city of Murcia.
In addition to the director and screenwriter, the project directly mobilizes more than a dozen people - most of them women - directly linked to audiovisual creation, among actresses and technical personnel from the Region. The short film is starring the actress student at ESAD Cecilia Mansilla and in the words of the director "reflects the reality that we lived a few months ago in which life had stopped for millions of people.
This confinement has brought with it many attitudes and aspects of us that we did not know, many responses to pressure or anxiety.
We built a facade where you can see that we are looking good towards others, but dreams do not lie, it is the way our fears have to come to light.
" The New Filmmakers initiative arose from the need to show new talents to the public by actively helping in the production of their scripts.
Likewise, it is committed to supporting cooperation and entrepreneurship in the development of these works from the university level. Its objectives include promoting equal opportunities for women in film practice, particularly among emerging talents, and promoting the materialization of works based on quality scripts produced by female filmmakers in our region. The work, once completed, will be premiered at the Regional Film Archive next October in a special event in which the filmmakers will present their work to the public.
