The streets San Nicolás, Riquelme and Segado del Olmo will be pedestrian before the end of the year (26/06/2020)

| The Governing Board gives the go-ahead to the specifications to contract the works that will reduce traffic by almost 84% | The Governing Board has approved in its session this morning the specifications to contract the road traffic restriction works in the surroundings of San Nicolás.This action is part of the City Council's new mobility model that puts pedestrians at the center of decision-making and that seeks to recover spaces for Murcians, thus promoting sustainability to maintain environmental quality levels. Thanks to these works, current traffic will be reduced, with a maximum intensity of 321 vehicles per hour, up to 83.64% and a decrease in emissions of 27.3%.The project contemplates the traffic restriction in the streets San Nicolás, Riquelme and Segado del Olmo, with the implementation of two control points:- one at the beginning of Calle San Nicolás, next to the access from its intersection with San Pedro,- and another prior to the beginning of Riquelme street, at the confluence of Cuesta de la Magdalena, San Benito and Plaza Mayor streets. In addition, the provision of 2-wheel vehicle spaces will be improved on Morera, Riquelme, San Nicolás and Santa Teresa streets, and loading and unloading areas will be implemented on Santa Teresa and Santa Catalina streets. The action will be completed with the modification of the existing vertical and horizontal road signs to adapt it to the new permitted traffic directions, and signs will be installed to indicate the restriction of access to the San Nicolás and San Benito-Riquelme roads.Access will be allowed for residents, users of garage spaces, owners of business premises or activities, municipal public service vehicles, assistance, emergency and taxis. This access will be regulated by cameras with license plate reading like those that exist in Alfonso X.The system is complemented by specific computer programs for the Residential Priority System (SPR) and for the management of sanctionable events, CARIN, through which it is possible to manage the registration lists authorized by the Murcia City Council to access the restricted traffic area. The system digitizes the license plates of all vehicles that access restricted traffic streets through checkpoints, discriminating between vehicles whose license plates are authorized to access, and which have previously been loaded as white lists, and those vehicles that have not they have access authorization, and therefore they are the object of a possible punishable event. This technological system has proven less invasive for public roads than the traditional retractable bollard access control system, given that the latter system is a recurring object of accidents due to the impact of vehicles that sometimes leave the hydraulic system out of service, causing Difficulty controlling access to the restricted traffic zone for the time it takes to restore the bollard. The tender budget amounts to 135,050.70 euros and the execution period is two months. These works will reduce noise and environmental pollution, as well as improve road safety on these streets.Technical studyBefore carrying out this project, a technical study was carried out that analyzed mobility in the area between Gran Vía, Acisclo Díaz, Pintor Sobejano and Juan de la Cierva in order to design the most appropriate action to achieve a more urban environment.

friendly and safe.In order to carry out this study, the collaboration of the Chair of Mobility and Sustainable Transport of the San Antonio Catholic University was carried out, which, in addition to installing mobile loops to measure traffic activity, carried out manual vehicle counts and surveys among residents and those responsible for establishments and shops in the neighborhood. For the definitive planning of the possible improvements in traffic reordering and management, different microsimulation models were carried out with up to 18 alternatives, the most convenient being that of restricting road traffic on both Calle San Nicolás and Calle Riquelme.
