The PSOE calls for solutions to the lack of control of plastic waste accentuated by the Covid-19 (20/06/2020)

| "The increase in single-use plastic waste such as gloves and masks can pose an environmental problem and a danger for the spread of the virus", warns Andrés Guerrero, socialist councilor | Therefore, the Municipal Socialist Group proposes a motion for the Murcia City Council to work on raising awareness of the new environmental dangers derived from Covid-19. Due to the health crisis we are facing a completely new environmental situation, with new issues and problems arising from the necessary measures to reduce the spread of the virus.

"The environmental situation caused by the Covid-19 is worrying.

There has been a decrease in recycling, it is rare not to see gloves and masks on our streets and green areas, more and more restaurants use home delivery with single-pack containers.

use ...

We must start to tackle this new reality and raise awareness among Murcian people so that they adopt environmentally friendly practices in our municipality, "explains Socialist councilor Andrés Guerrero. In this sense, Guerrero presents a motion for the next plenary session of the Murcia City Council in order to stop the increase in single-use plastic through awareness campaigns.

"There are many things that in this situation we must take into account.

For example, the use of masks and gloves practically daily, will increase the amount of garbage.

This type of waste, for reasons of lack of civility or because they are deposited in containers such as those outside shops and supermarkets, they fill the streets of our city and districts with garbage and it is also a direct danger since they can contribute to the spread of the virus, "Guerrero argues. Another issue to consider is that of the hospitality sector, "capacity restrictions force many bars and restaurants to redirect their businesses to home service.

This implies the use of normally single-use plastic containers, which if well they are recyclable to a certain extent, they are not entirely, "says Guerrero. Raising citizens' awareness of these new paradigms and the impact they may have on our lives is key to tackling the problem.

"That is why we are proposing to the Murcia City Council to organize campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the deposit and collection of masks, gloves and similar waste so that the residents of our municipality are clear on how to recycle them," says the mayor. "We also propose to promote the use of reusable or recyclable nature containers, trying to avoid the increase in single-use plastics and to carry out an exhaustive control of the way in which such waste is being treated and recycled" Guerrero concludes.
