Math_TalentUM, the mathematical contest of the University of Murcia (UMU), concludes with an exciting final and the awards ceremony that has brought together more than a hundred participants, including students and teachers, in a virtual way to demonstrate their scientific skills. During a final fight, the teams had to solve 30 mathematical investigations in a period of one hour.
After the jury's decision, a total of six groups are declared winners of this first edition.
The winners, regarding educational levels, have been the Elis Fractal Freaks teams (El Limonar International School, El Palmar), Mate Trivial (San Cristóbal, Cartagena), both 5th and 6th Primary; Aureola, (Monteagudo-Nelva, from Puente Tocinos) and Las Cat's Woman, (Sanbuenaventura Capuchinos school, from Murcia) at the level of 1st and 2nd ESO; and Los Geométricos (IES Sanje, from Alcantarilla) and Los Little Einsteins, (Madres Mercedarias school, from Lorca) from 3rd and 4th ESO. Math_TalentUM was born with the idea of ??bringing mathematics closer to Murcian students and increasing their interest in the subject through leisure and fun.
Through poetry, theater and other projects in which creativity has been fostered, students have demonstrated the presence that this discipline has in all areas of our lives. With the entry into force of the state of alarm, the contest, which was still in the registration phase, was forced to reinvent itself.
Far from a face-to-face final in which the teams showed the projects carried out for the first phase, the jury created a team event in which, through collaborative work, they had to demonstrate their mathematical knowledge. Awards The awards ceremony, which took place on May 27 in the same format, was chaired in a 'virtual' way by the rector of the UMU Mr.
José Luján Alcaraz, the vice-rector for Scientific Transfer and Disclosure Mr.
José Manuel López Nicolás , the president of the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia Mr.
Ángel Pérez Ruzafa; the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics D.
Pascual Lucas Saorín and Eliseo Chacón Vera, director of the Department of Mathematics of the UMU. This online ceremony highlighted the close relationship that the institution maintains with the centers of the Region to enhance vocations and enthusiasm for mathematics in students of all educational stages.
In this act of recognition, the winning teams received their gifts, as well as souvenir gifts that will be sent to the schools of the participating teams. This project has been promoted by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC + i) belonging to the Vice-Rector's Office for Scientific Transfer and Dissemination of the UMU and the UMU School of Mathematics with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and the Technology (FECYT) Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Academy of Sciences of the Region of Murcia. The composition of the jury has been formed by D.
