"The Covid-19 is reducing the number of passengers on public transport, which will cause citizens to look for alternatives.
We must provide facilities so that these elections are sustainable and do not increase the use of private vehicles," explains Socialist councilor Esther Nevado. The Covid-19, safety distances, movement limitations ...
have caused us different paradigms that we are not used to and that we must face.
However, these measures, in addition to being a challenge, could also be used as an opportunity when it comes to transportation.
"The cities that have managed to reduce in a real and effective way the use of motor vehicles for private use were not planned with such a perspective but were able to take advantage of situations to change and rethink their mobility model," explains socialist councilor Esther Nevado.
"We are presented with ideal circumstances to rethink our model of public transport," he added. The socialist mayor will present a motion to this effect to the next plenary session.
Nevado proposes that temporary bicycle lanes be created to absorb part of the public transport commuters and to connect the bicycle lanes that already exist.
"The measures in the face of the Covid-19 crisis are reducing the number of passengers that each form of public transport admits, this will cause people to look for alternatives to get around and, in this sense, provisional bicycle routes can absorb part of the public transport passengers "explains Nevado. "But for this they must be well planned, connecting axes of origin and destination of the most common displacements," warns the socialist mayor.
For this reason, the Municipal Group proposes that these provisional routes be complemented by other actions that help limit the use of the private car in the urban center.
"The dissuasive spaces, also temporary and free, can play an important role and be an effective solution if they are connected with eventual roads and also with benches of the public bicycle system and secure bike racks for storing private bicycles," he points out. The councilor also puts the focus on pedestrians: "It is not only important to improve the space for bicycles, pedestrians must also be the object of attention given the social distancing measures.
That is why we plan to expand pedestrian areas by occupying roads and conversion of high-density urban spaces ". Finally, Nevado urges the government team to reduce the speed of traffic, filmed in the city, limiting it to 20km / h as far as possible, "which will contribute to the planned measures enjoying greater security" . "We are aware that Murcia has 125 kilometers of permanent roads and that it has been announced that they are going to increase them.
Also that they are going to put in place vertical and horizontal signage to warn of the presence of cyclists.
All this is fine, but it is not enough Murcia needs more.
It is not about alerting the presence of cyclists but about introducing the bicycle into the mobility strategy and betting on a sustainable model, "explains Esther Nevado.
"Ultimately, we propose to provide a provisional, temporary and removable, low-cost and effective solution, as is already being implemented in cities such as Berlin, Mexico City or New York or Paris," he concludes.
