The Molino del Amor opens, the heritage jewel that culminates the Murcia Río-Malecón axis and is integrated into the La Alfujía route (20/05/2020)

| José Ballesta: "With this milestone, which represents a vindication of our huertanas roots, we go one step further in the process of recovery and opening of public spaces for Murcia "| The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and the Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, visited the Molino del Amor today, whose rehabilitation works have been completed and is open to all Murcians as one of the great heritage elements of the Huerta de Murcia. This historic enclave culminates the urban green itinerary made up of Murcia Río and El Malecón, and is integrated into the La Aljufía route, a 12.5 km natural axis that runs through this larger ditch and which features hydraulic mills, heritage elements and characteristic natural landscapes of the Huerta de Murcia, which passes through the Rueda de La Ñora and ends at the La Contraparada dam.El Molino del Amor, municipally owned, is located at the end of the Paseo del Malecón, next to the Carretera de La Ñora, on the border between La Arboleja and La Albatalía, on the Alquiafia Mayor canal, and it is a listed construction , dated in the 18th century although, as in other cases in the Huerta, it was probably built on an earlier medieval mill.“The opening of this environment, which is integrated within the large pedestrian axis of Murcia Río, with more than 50,000 m2, and the Paseo del Malecón, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, is one more step in the process of recovery and opening of spaces public for Murcia ", said José Ballesta, who indicated that" this milestone in the recovery of heritage is also a vindication of our roots: the Huerta de Murcia, the most valuable historical, cultural and ecological legacy of the town of Murcia, which forms part of our collective identity ”.Culture and agroecologyThis new space, which has an open and landscaped space of about 3,700 m², is expected to open as a space for culture, with concerts, exhibitions and activities to promote the heritage of the Huerta de Murcia, and also as a center for agroecological research in collaboration with specialists from the University of Murcia. The property is a one-story building of about 160 m², which retains its main structure, which has been recovered, through a comprehensive rehabilitation of the building and adaptation of the open channels of the ditches, which has also been the subject of the project and which includes orchards and facilities linked to the Mill for its enjoyment by citizens who extend the route of the walk to this destination. It is located at the point where the Acequia Mayor de la Aljufía is divided into three branches: the Aljufía itself, which follows its central course, the Acevi de Caravija on the right and that of Zaraiche on the left.Windmills of Love, Fulling Mill and GunpowderThis action is part of the Huerta de Murcia Action Plan, the most important environmental and socio-cultural initiative of the last decades, which offers a structuring vision of the entire municipality, connecting the Murcian districts, with the historic center and the river.Within the axis of heritage recovery, the City Council has also recovered the environment of the Batán Mill, on the Camino Viejo de Monteagudo (Zarandona), an action that includes the rehabilitation of the base of the Arab Tower of the XII-XIII centuries, declared Well of Cultural Interest, and the 18th century bridge over the Azarbe Mayor. In the same way, the restoration works of the old Molino de la Pólvora, which is located in the Acequia de la Aljufia, in the district of Rincón de Seca, in one of the most beautiful surroundings of the Huerta, are being completed. The works have brought to light the remains of the eighteenth-century factory and will make it possible to enjoy living areas and a viewpoint-stage on the bed of the Acequia Mayor Aljufía in the coming weeks.
