The distinction is included in the fifth edition of the Contest of Good Municipal Practices in the prevention and intervention against absenteeism and bullying. The Valuation Commission of this contest has communicated to the Murcia City Council that the project entitled 'Educational Reinforcement and Prevention of School Absenteeism with Social Volunteering' has been awarded in the category of municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants. The award will be presented in a ceremony that will be called shortly.
For the councilor Pilar Torres "projects of this type are those that give meaning to the work of the Department because they provide care and support to those most in need, which are our absolute priority."More than 2,000 volunteersThe award-winning project has been running for two decades.
During that time, more than 2,000 volunteers have participated in it, which has enabled 2,500 vulnerable minors to continue their studies with their work.
The results of the project demonstrate its usefulness, since "more than 95% of the participating children have finished primary education and have continued studying in secondary school," said councilor Pilar Torres. In addition, most of the schoolchildren served by the volunteers have taken part in the Learning and Performance Improvement Program (PEMAR), which has helped them to continue their training successfully.
The recipients of the project are mostly minors derived by the social work units and by the specialized teams of the Department. The minor participants are children and adolescents who are in school and in whom the technicians detect that there may be a risk of truancy.
To correct this situation, an accompaniment task is made available to them.
Volunteers work with students on issues like commitment and self-help.
The importance of educational promotion for their development is also instilled in them and the family relationship of minors with their parents is strengthened.Improved behaviorThe educational centers that have minors that are part of this project carry out annual evaluations in which they show their degree of satisfaction with the activities carried out with their students.
The results show how the heads of the schools report that the participating minors improve their behavior in class and become more involved in the daily tasks that the teachers entrust to them.Children who are part of the project are followed up later.
This work is carried out by the Social Services centers, through the social work units, the Child Protection teams, the Intervention team with Families in Special Situations and the technicians of the Accompaniment Program for Inclusion.
