The City Council modifies its strategy against the tiger mosquito due to the state of alarm and the rains (04/05/2020)

| The Municipal Health Services will also fumigate in the garden lanes because Murcians cannot access their second homes to remove the accumulation of water | The City Council, through the Municipal Health Services, dependent on the Department of Health and Sports, headed by Felipe Coello, has redesigned its strategy for controlling the tiger mosquito -aedes albopictus-, intensifying the actions in the garden and districts, including, in addition, risk areas in the city of Murcia itself. The modification of the program to combat this insect is due to the rains of the last weeks and the confinement measures established during the state of alarm to reduce the impact of the population by Covid-19.“In addition to this situation, citizen collaboration in the elimination and control of mosquito foci in private properties has been hampered, especially in second uninhabited residences, by the current confinement measures, especially in the elimination of foci in the garden ”, explains Felipe Coello. In this way, the fumigation of scuppers, boulevards and other spaces of special incidence is now joined by disinsection in garden lanes. The municipal health officer highlights that "the necessary resources are being allocated to ensure that mosquito populations remain controlled below the recommended sanitary thresholds, since the objective now is to combat the insect due to the diseases it can transmit and its reproduction, in small accumulations of water ”.

Thus, actions with larvicidal products are being carried out throughout the city's scupper network and its districts, all irrigation channels, as well as on the boulevards and open lots where water accumulates, generating breeding foci.Actions have also been programmed, in case it is finally considered necessary, to combat the possible hatching of adult mosquitoes due to uncontrolled private foci, such as swimming pools, rafts or private plots whose owner has not been able to take the appropriate measures for their elimination or treatment. An operation for Murcia and districtsFive work teams, made up of ten operators, are in charge of the offensive against the tiger mosquito: three groups displaced in districts; one in the urban area of ??Murcia; and one for notices. It has already been performed in districts such as Zeneta, Alquerías, Guadalupe, Beniaján and in areas of Murcia, such as the Carmen neighborhood, Plaza Camachos and Los Molinos del Río.This week they will focus on gardens in the urban area, such as La Flota and Vistalegre, as well as towns such as El Esparragal, El Raal, San Ginés, Llano de Brujas, Churra and Torreagüera. For the execution of this service, there are off-road vehicles equipped with long-range spray guns and nebulizers and detection and treatment drones for areas inaccessible by land.Likewise, it has the availability of a helicopter, if necessary, for large areas flooded and inaccessible by land, such as certain boulevards, ravines or channels that run through our municipality. The important role of citizen collaborationSince the aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito) appeared in the municipality of Murcia for the first time in 2011, the Health Services have started a control program based on citizen collaboration, when it was detected that 80% of the outbreaks are on private property and, in the case of the Murcia vegetable garden, second residences with gardens, swimming pools, orchards with water tanks, etc.

have been identified as critical points.Until now, this strategy, together with the control of scuppers, drone treatments in areas of difficult access, among other actions, has been effective in controlling the tiger mosquito, minimizing the inconvenience to the neighbors.“Due to the confinement measures established to reduce the impact on the population of the disease commonly known as Covid-19, it is necessary to rethink the strategy for fighting this plague, in order to intensify control actions to ensure the state sanitary of the city ”, explains Felipe Coello.Recommendations to combat itThe municipal health services of the City Council have launched a prevention and information campaign against the tiger mosquito.

The program is available in the news section of the City Council website, as well as on the portal of www.ayuntamientomurcia-salud.es.

It should be noted that the company Aguas de Murcia will collaborate in the distribution of the brochure by sending it to all those citizens who have an electronic invoice. Some of the recommendations are:  Tips to avoid sting:-You can use repellents, especially on the legs.

The mosquito usually bites in the areas of the body closest to the ground.-Maintain good body hygiene.

Sweat and strong body odors attract them.-Put mosquito nets on the windows and use electrical devices against insects.

Actions to combat it:-Avoid containers that can accumulate water, such as buckets or drums.-Remove accumulated water in objects or empty it weekly, such as in vases, ashtrays, flowerpot plans, plastic pools, drinkers or tires.-Tightly cover with lid or mosquito net the water tanks.-Maintain chlorine levels in your pond, raft or pool.-Put in your pond or garden fountain ornamental fish, which eat the larvae.-Clean roof gutters and terraces regularly.
