Murcians will be able to discover the ins and outs of the San Esteban site from home (21/04/2020)

| Next Saturday a series of documentaries will be released in which the latest findings will be announced in the excavations carried out in the suburb of La Arrixaca | The Murcian people will be able to discover, next weekend from their homes, the ins and outs of the San Esteban site and the latest findings found during the excavations carried out.The series' La Murcia andalusí through the suburb of La Arrixaca.

Discover the San Esteban 'site is made up of four 15-minute videos through which archaeologists will reveal the latest findings and other secrets of the Arrabal de la Arrixaca.This series will be available on Saturday from 5 pm on the YouTube channel of the Murcia City Council.In the first video Carmen Martínez, the municipal archaeologist will speak about 'La Murcia Andalusí', a preamble to the site, placing the viewer in medieval Murcia.The second video will talk about 'Why is it important to investigate and conserve the San Esteban deposit?' where Jorge Eiroa, director of the research project, will explain what makes the San Esteban archaeological site exceptional and why it is important to investigate and conserve it, summarizing the current state of development of the project.The third video will be 'Life and death in the suburb of Arrixaca' by María Haber from the University of Murcia.

Starting from the remains found in the cemetery of the San Esteban archaeological site, the director of Anthropology of the research project will briefly explain what can be known about the lives of those who were buried there through their bones.The last video will tell how was the 'Commerce and merchants in the funduq of San Esteban'.

Alicia Hernández Robles, co-director of the excavations in the San Esteban archaeological site, will explain the particularities of the large building known as Recinto I and why it can be essential to know the commercial relations of the city of Murcia in the medieval period.The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, explained that "with this initiative we continue to work to spread the historical richness of the site, making known the way of life of the people of Murcia at that time.

In this way, the people of Murcia will value really the archaeological jewel that we have in our city ".In this informative work of the site, the City Council and the University of Murcia organized guided tours, which have already been enjoyed by more than 2,500 Murcians and which, since February, could also be carried out at night thanks to the lighting installation.Likewise, the Arrabal de La Arrixaca Archeology course has been organized, in which the scientific research carried out at the site with the conclusions of the archaeological intervention, medieval archeology, the daily objects found, the diet and the consumption of the ancestors through the study of ceramics and glass, as well as the restoration of the archaeological site.The Corregidor Room still shows the exhibition 'San Esteban al cielo abierto', sponsored by El Corte Inglés, and which has 37 photographs, plans and texts of the discoveries made at the site.It must be remembered that the Government Board of May 17, 2019 approved the second addendum of the collaboration agreement with the University of Murcia, to continue scientific research, training, enhancement and dissemination of the San Esteban Archaeological Site.In this way, archaeologists have continued working in the area given the interest and importance of the findings found so far.

With this extension of the agreement, it is deepened in Precincts I and II, as well as expanding the excavation area in the cemetery.This third period of research thus allows the research and scientific analysis work in this site to be maintained.
