| The Mayor of Murcia asks the Government of Spain for a direct and unconditional fund of 5,000 million euros so that the City Councils can guarantee the essential goods for the population | The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, held a meeting this morning with the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, in which the mayors of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) also participated, on the occasion of the crisis and socioeconomic health generated by the global pandemic of COVID-19."The state of health alarm that began on March 14 must give way to a state of social alarm," said Mayor Ballesta during his speech to the President.
"When the virus is defeated - which it will be - Spain will be a painful country, with tens of thousands of families broken and a society that will oscillate between despondency and confusion."For this reason, “we have requested from the Government of Spain a direct and unconditional fund of 5,000 million euros for City Councils, to attend to the basic needs of the population, as well as a fund of 500 million for public transport and 300 million for food ”, informed the mayor after the telematic meeting, who indicated that“ unfortunately during the meeting the requests made by the municipalities have not been confirmed and we have been summoned to a next meeting with the Minister of Health and the Vice President for Transition Ecological, in which we will address this issue ”.Municipalities: forces and bodies of social action"In this state of health alert, our country has had an exceptional human group: the health workers.
The Spanish people recognize every afternoon, without missing a single one, the effort of all of them ”."Well, to face this unprecedented social emergency, you have, Mr.
President, a human group willing to take over: 8,131 mayors, 68,230 councilors, hundreds of thousands of municipal officials, 41 councils, 7 councils and 4 Island Councils in which 50,326 people work ”.“We are the ones who walk the streets and squares every day, what we call neighbors by their first and last names, the people they stop on the street to make their demands.
We know them and can act effectively and quickly.
Closeness and humanities are key in this crisis, "said José Ballesta."Give us, Mr.
President, the means and resources like the ones we are demanding today: direct funds for the municipalities, unconditional funds, aid for transport, etc.
Do not disdain this authentic army, these forces and bodies of social action, because we will be loyal and we will all measure up to that great people that is Spain, which is giving a response of civility and moral height unprecedented in the history of our country ” , stressed the mayor of Murcia.President Pedro Sánchez described the meeting as "vital", since the City Councils play a "transcendental" role in the de-escalation and subsequent recovery of the country; and expressed his intention to hold this meeting systematically every two weeks.
