UMU researchers publish a book on saliva as a sample to assess the state of health (17/04/2020)

Researchers from the University of Murcia (UMU) Asta Tvarijonaviciute, Silvia Martínez-Subiela and Pia López Jornet edit, together with researcher Elsa Lamy from the University of Évora (Portugal), the book 'Saliva in Health and Desease.

The Present and Future of a Unique Sample for Diagnosis'. The work brings together all the knowledge generated about saliva as a source of biomarkers for evaluating health and well-being in humans and animals.

Researchers from 8 countries have participated in it: Spain, Portugal, Brazil, the United States, Lithuania, Morocco, Poland and the United Kingdom. 'Saliva in Health and Disease.

The Present and Future of a Unique Sample for Diagnosis' is an interdisciplinary collaboration, whose objectives are to continue promoting the One Health approach, since the researchers believe that "the integration of knowledge leads to a higher quality of information relevant, leading to more efficient research and leading to more precise conclusions.

" And, the experts affirm that the book "provides general ideas about the possibilities and uses of saliva in clinical practice or research, and indicates the main precautions that each must take into account before using saliva as an analytical sample " About the researchers Following this line that advocates interdisciplinarity, the editors come from different scientific areas: Asta Tvarijonaviciute is a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the UMU Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Clinical Analysis (Interlab), focusing her studies on the analysis of non-invasive biomarkers of health and well-being in different species. Silvia Martínez-Subiela, full professor of the Department of Animal Medicine and Surgery of the Veterinary School and member of the Interlab of the UMU, focuses her studies on the development and validation of assays to quantify biomarkers in serum and other fluids such as saliva. Pia López Jornet is a professor in the Department of Stomatology at the UMU Faculty of Medicine and investigates in the field of disease diagnosis through the study of saliva. Likewise, Elsa Lamy is a researcher at the University of Évora and her main field of research is salivary proteomics and, more specifically, the relationship between the protein composition of saliva, taste perception and consequent food preferences and choices.
