Heritage will museum the space of the exterior archaeological remains of the wall of Calle Sagasta (17/04/2020)

In addition to the restitution of the remains, the lateral closings will be replaced by glass railings, platforms will be created to contemplate the remains, a step space will be set up next to the palm tree and the pavement will be renewed to serve as a reminder of the medieval layoutThe Governing Board has approved the project and specifications to contract the work to enhance the archaeological remains of the wall located in the urban scene of Sagasta street. The maximum amount is 129,914 euros and the execution period amounts to 4 months. This action is comprehensive in nature and affects both the remains seen and those preserved buried under the road, as well as the urban space.

In addition, this intervention must connect with the municipal property remains preserved under the adjacent buildingThe project includes actions to eliminate unsuitable elements such as concrete railings and low walls, as well as the pertinent restoration, reconstruction and volumetric reintegration. In addition, a link will be established with the remains located in the adjoining building, whose project was approved by the Governing Board on March 27, for the possible adaptation as a visitable space of the entire site and the reordering and significance of the urban scene. For the treatment of degraded parts, the use of materials similar to the original ones, such as lime and lime water, will be a priority, both for the consolidation of the deteriorated layers and to reconstruct the missing parts that give stability to the property.

These materials have been studied and tested in the urban archaeological sites of Murcia and the Region of Murcia, as an example the Site of San Esteban since 2010, having demonstrated its stability.Once the lost elements have been restored and the Andalusian defensive remains have been fully preserved, the possible museumization of the entire space will be considered, as an exhibition route, which can be visited, with the highest possible degree of accessibility and sustainable maintenance. The conservation and musealization of the space involves the excavation of three areas.

These actions must be supervised archeologically until reaching the desired levels and allowed by the technical archeology department of the Murcia City Council and previous archaeological excavation permits issued by the CARM:- Round road between wall and antemural wall.

After removing the terrazzo flooring, we will proceed to determine the possible soil remains and their conservation or just document the state of the space and its subsequent museum adaptation- Plaza José Mª Bautista area.

After removing the metal railing, the concrete wall and the pavement floor, the earthwork will be carried out manually and with archaeological methodology to locate the upper remains of the tower or a possible lime mortar flooring.

This project will contemplate the exhumation of said remains, if any, for later viewing and inclusion in the exhibition area.- Calle Aliaga in the area where the palm tree is currently located: To adapt the new access, the aim is to lower the level of this pedestrian street by 40 cm., Which will serve to give greater prominence to the volume of the wall. The valorization of the archaeological remains goes through recovering the leading role within the urban framework and providing the group with readings and approaches that enable a greater relationship between citizens and visitors with the historical traces that have shaped the city.To this end, the continuity of the exterior-interior archaeological remains will be promoted, the museum tour will be made possible, the accessibility in the contemplation of the remains and their approach to them will be allowed, and the integration in the proposal of the identification pavements will be facilitated of the tourist route project along the route of the wallThus, the lateral closures will be replaced by glass railings integrated from the pavement, platforms for contemplating the remains will be created, including a space for stands next to the palm tree and the pavement will be renewed with an exploded view oriented to the geometry of the remains, which will serve as a reminder of the medieval layout as opposed to later urban development.
