The City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Administration Modernization, which José Guillén directs, has decided to switch off a total of 2,032 light points located on the coast, beltways, shopping centers and large gardens, due to the absence of activity work and decreased traffic at night.
The Public Lighting Service has agreed this measure, which began to be applied last Tuesday, as an action of energy responsibility during the state of alarm proclaimed by the Government of Spain.
“They are avenues and roads with a lot of daily traffic but which, today, is almost non-existent, so it is also necessary to adapt our resources to the circumstances we are experiencing, thus contributing to the improvement of the environment, in addition to the consequent energy savings and economic for the municipality â€, explains José Guillén.
Specifically, the measure contemplates extinguishing one of every three lampposts in these places, very crowded before confinement by drivers and citizens.
Also, this measure will not be applied in residential areas.
This action will reduce 105,481 kWh of consumption.
In addition, the disconnection of the 2,032 points of light will mean reducing the emission of 52,213 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere and an economic saving of 14,767 euros per month.
“Before before the declaration of the state of alarm, the City Council put in a battery of measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
These actions entail, in many cases, taking other decisions such as the one recently adopted regarding public lighting, derived from the commercial inactivity of the area and the paralysis of non-essential activities, â€explains José Guillén.
