The Mechanical Workshop of the Scientific and Technical Research Area (ACTI) of the University of Murcia has joined the so-called 'AI.RE.' project as a collaborator.
(Innovative Help to create Respirators), which is what the international initiative 'Open Source COVID-19 Medical Supplies' has been called in Spain.
The aforementioned project intends that professionals from different fields work on the same global objective: to design and manufacture in record time, and at low cost, medical equipment that is beginning to be scarce in hospitals with the current coronavirus crisis, such as artificial respirators, masks, eye protection screens, etc.
'AIR.'
It is supported at the national level by the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare, from which the heads of the autonomous communities have been appointed, the architect Rosa León being the coordinator of the Makers group in the Region of Murcia.
For the moment, groups of experts (professionals and amateurs) have been established in each of the disciplines that will intervene in the project (Medicine, design, Engineering, additive manufacturing, etc.), who are in permanent contact to exchange information through different forums, social networks and messaging platforms.
A census of 3D printers and their availability has also been drawn up and the first prototypes are already being printed while continuing to be in constant contact with the Directorate of the Murcian Health Service, in order to find out in real time what the material needs are. health in the Region of Murcia.
The goal is to have everything ready to manufacture the devices in a massive way once the final designs are validated and when circumstances require it.
The University of Murcia has three 3D printers at ACTI that are at the disposal of this project and work is underway to incorporate printers from other UMU services into the manufacture of sanitary materials.
In the face of an extraordinary emergency situation like the one we are going through, the ACTI of the University of Murcia, through the Vice-Rector's Office for Research and Internationalization, has not hesitated to make all its human and technological resources available to this initiative and join this synergy of professionals with the sole common purpose of helping to stop one of the worst health crises in history.
