Esther Nevado: “The regional government assumes, together, that some vulnerable are worth more than others and the municipal officials do not question it” (29/01/2020)

The councilor of the Socialist Group will defend tomorrow in plenary that no discriminatory principles are introduced in the granting of subsidies given to social associations

The Socialist Municipal Group considers it unacceptable that the extreme right and the regional government consider prioritizing some groups over others in the valuation criteria that regulate subsidies to social associations.

Therefore, the socialist councilwoman Esther Nevado presents a motion to the next Plenary urging the Government team of the City Council to demand that the Government of the Region not include these criteria of prioritization and treat poverty in a transversal way.

“The extreme right is asking to review the scales that regulate subsidies and to prioritize projects aimed at families, people with disabilities and the elderly.

This is to prioritize social policies by sectors, divide the weakest and confront each other, ”denounces the Socialist mayor.

“An obsolete and ineffective approach that has already been overcome in the last century.

With him we are saying that some are worth more than others, that there are vulnerable people who are more vulnerable than others.

This is not based on a study of real needs but on the genius of some enlightened one.

A group is not more urgent than another, the urgent thing is to define social policies and act on poverty rates.

That is what our regional government should do and not listen to the ideological biases of VOX, ”protests the councilwoman.

“32% of the population of Murcia is at risk of poverty and social exclusion, and taking into account that poverty is transversal, prioritizing social policies by sector is unfair and inefficient,” explains Esther Nevado.

“Attention to vulnerable groups must be done globally.

We do not invent it, it is already established in the Regional Pact against Poverty and Social Exclusion promoted by the EAPN.

We are only asking that what is already established be fulfilled, ”adds Nevado, and continues“ not doing so is attacking the right to diversity. ”

In addition to the attempt to prioritize some groups over others, the agreement accepted by the Government of the region assumes issues such as parental veto, non-compliance with current legislation in care of foreign minors and international treaties regarding the protection of minors.

“This shows what we already knew: the Regional Government does not mind selling to the extreme right, and little or nothing the rights of the most vulnerable.

Moreover, he assumes without complexes, at close range what he imposes and his colleagues in the municipal government or question it, ”says Snowy.

“Even the main social organizations, including those that represent disability, a sector that would be favored, have shown their disagreement with this measure and have said they are against it being at the expense of others,” explains the Socialist councilor.

This was stated in press last week by the president of the EAPN or the president of CERMI, among others.

“It is our obligation as politicians to preserve the model of coexistence that characterizes us and that the groups that break the chest by the people who need it most feel that we all care equally.

No vulnerable group is less than another, ”says Esther Nevado.

For all this, the councilor brings to the next plenary session of the City of Murcia a motion in which in addition to urging the Government team of the City Council to require the Regional Government not to include these criteria, calls for the urgent implementation of the Regional Strategy of the Fight against Poverty.
