"Ránquines are the weapons of mass destruction of universities," says Professor Rodríguez Muñoz at the university holiday "
This morning the academic act of Santo Tomás de Aquino was held at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Murcia, which has been enlivened by several pieces of Beethoven, by the Orchestra of the University of Murcia, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the birth of the German musician.
Data, information and reality
The master lecture, entitled "Data, information and reality: miscellaneous", has been given by José Vicente Rodríguez Muñoz, Professor of Library and Information Science of the Department of Information and Documentation at the University of Murcia.
In a proem of a personal nature, Rodríguez Muñoz has explained various circumstances of his beginnings in the center of studies, whose origins date back to the mid-1970s: "I feel I have said- the immense and immeasurable honor of being part of almost half of the history of my university, to which I have given myself in the creation of four faculties, a department and the design of almost a dozen bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. "
Rodriguez has allowed himself to offer the Rector some advice: that when someone visits his office, he says: "Do not ask what your university can do for you, but what you can do for your university."
Information and Knowledge Science
Regarding the subject itself of the discourse, he has affirmed that, in the field of Information Science, "the model is constituted by a sort of hierarchical structure, where the data is the base that sustains the information and it is interpreted for knowledge. In some models another higher step is represented, the wisdom that governs knowledge. "
He added later that "what we call reality is a space recognized by a whole network of nodes that interconnect triangles that are the ones we create, process and observe, not being a uniform and continuous wrapper, but a set of pieces or quanta."
Ránquines as weapons of mass destruction
The professor has referred to an idea of Vlatko Vedral to say that "The laws of Nature are information about information, and beyond that there is nothing but darkness. This is the only gateway to the understanding of reality" , adding that "it should be understood that, both the Science of Communication and Information, together with Information Technology, are fundamental axes that help and provide support for the future of people, to intertwine with the set of realities with which we live ".
In the last part of his speech, he affirmed, in his capacity as an expert in bibliometry, that "I solemnly declare that the rankings are the weapons of mass destruction of the universities", and that they only serve for the universities to fight between They for being the best.
He has finally pointed out that, very contrary to this permanent dispute, "universities must be sustainable" and that the task of the university must be that of "fraternity for the advancement of Science and Knowledge".

"
The Rector José Luján, for his part, has referred in his speech to the importance of this traditional academic celebration: "Because the celebration of the holiday of our patron Saint Thomas Aquinas, is light, music and joy that cheers the soul A moment of pause in the middle of the academic year for, with forms and rites inherited from a history that sinks in the Middle Ages, remember the legitimacy of the university as a generating and transmitting institution of science and culture and look to the future, "and said that this holiday makes us wonder "about the challenges facing the university and how they affect and condition the preservation of its role as an institution".
The rector Luján has assured that, still without recovering from the impairment of financing in the years of crisis, and without even digesting the "empacho caused by the much needed, as temporary and procedurally questionable adaptation to the EHEA, the Spanish public universities have before them challenge of Homeric proportions ": the fact of continuing to train professionals and guarantee progress in" the world in transformation in which we live ", hence, he added, that" the university must strive to provide the increasingly demanded training throughout life; it must connect its offer of studies with new business realities and emerging professions; it must guide the globalization of knowledge. "
University Forever
"The Spanish university has no wait," he said, adding that "We hope that the new minister Manuel Castells will immediately activate different reform initiatives that are in high demand.
