The City Council celebrates its first working meeting within the twinning between Murcia and Genoa (21/01/2020)

The Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, is on an institutional visit in Genoa where she has met with Stefano Balleari, first deputy mayor of Genoa, Laura Gaggero, councilor for Economic Development, Promotion of the City and Tourism, and Matteo Campora, Councilor for Sustainable Mobility, Transportation, Environment and Energy Efficiency.

This visit is the first work meeting in the framework of twinning between the two cities, after their recent approval unanimously by the respective municipal plenary sessions.

In this sense, this meeting has served to close the next visit to Murcia of a Genoese delegation, which will be headed by the mayor of the Italian city, Marco Bucci, for next spring.

The meeting marked the starting point for the different lines of work that will be carried out within the twinning and in the context of the Urban Agenda.

In this way, it has tried to advance in the management of common projects, which are currently being implemented with European funding, and thus mark a joint position on the work in networks of cities at European and international level.

For its part, Mercedes Bernabé has explained various programs that the city of Murcia has presented at the European Union level to obtain financing, including Genoa as a European partner.

This is the case of the H2020 Olympus project, focused on the implementation of innovative solutions applied to intermodal transport around major sporting events.

This initiative, led by the city of Murcia, has the participation of Genoa, which will be the European capital of sport 2024, and Saint Dennis, which will host the 2024 Olympic Games with Paris.

The mayor stressed that one of the main elements of this project is the connection between cities in a sustainable way.

"Murcia belongs to the Mediterranean Corridor, which in turn connects with the European corridors to which Genoa and Saint Dennis belong, so it will be necessary to work together to improve communications between cities," said the councilor.

Also, the DNA Lab Project was presented, presented by the City of Murcia to the call for Innovative Urban Actions of the European Commission.

In the words of Mercedes Bernabé, “through this program the city of Genoa will have the possibility of launching the Urban DNA methodology in one of its neighborhoods, as we remember that we are a national pilot experience for the implementation of the Spanish Urban Agenda and one of the key aspects is multilevel governance â€.

The meeting has ended with a proposal for joint programming within the framework of Murcia Gastronomic Capital.

Thus, Murcia will host a semifinal of the world pesto championship organized by the city of Genoa, as well as other manifestations of typical products.
