The City Council transfers to CHS the need to expand the water treatment plant of La Contraparada (09/01/2020)

José Ballesta asks the CHS to extend this concession, which would go from 6.5 hm3 to 15m3, and would imply two important consequences: "Free the Commonwealth of 8.5 cubic hectometers for other needs and reduce the cost of water for Murcia ".

The mayor of Murcia also urges the central government to award the works of the West Pluviales Interceptor Collector, "a vital infrastructure to guarantee the safety of Murcia in rainy episodes."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, held a meeting this morning with the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, Mario Urrea, in which he requested to extend the concession of the municipal water treatment plant of La Contraparada, from 6.5 cubic hectometers to 15 cubic hectometers, which is the production capacity of this plant;

a measure that will allow water prices to be adjusted, which will result in a new drop in rates for Murcian families.

"This action would imply two important consequences: free the Commonwealth of 8.5 cubic hectometers for other needs and reduce the cost of water for Murcia," said José Ballesta, who transferred the motion approved by the Plenary Session to the basin body from Murcia last December.

Given the current situation, the La Contraparada plant, of which the Murcia Consistory owns, is operating at 40% capacity.

This extension would mean reducing the water supply of the Commonwealth of Taibilla to the municipality, which is much more expensive to pay;

3.5 times more.

In this context, the mayor of Murcia has moved the need to expand the concession of the water treatment plant of La Contraparada.

This action has the backing of the Plenary Session of the City of Murcia, which unanimously approved the motion corresponding to this issue in December.

West Rainfall Interceptor Collector

The municipality of Murcia suffers from other problems due to the lack of infrastructure and facilities provided by the central government, such as the West Pluvial Interceptor Collector, “a vital infrastructure to guarantee the safety and integrity of Murcia in case of moderately heavy rains, that would end the problems of overflow of ramblas and their consequent floods in the northern part of the city, â€said the mayor of Murcia, who added that“ this infrastructure would solve a historical problem in the municipality of Murcia. â€

In this context, José Ballesta urged the Government of Spain to award the works of the West Pluvial Interceptor Collector and to start these urgently.

Tajo-Segura support

The mayor said during the meeting the support of the City of Murcia to the Tagus-Segura and his rejection of the zero transfer that the Central Government maintains against the technical criteria itself, and that has meant the cessation of the entry of water for irrigation that supplied to all the Spanish Levante.

The Tajo-Segura transfer is an infrastructure that, with more than 40 years of existence, generates 110,000 direct jobs every year, mainly in the agricultural sector, and around 30,000 more in the field of industry and transport in the provinces of Alicante , Murcia and Almeria.

In addition, its water feeds 2 million inhabitants of these three provinces every year.
