The Tourist Police has become a service appreciated by tourists and also by professionals in the tourism sector who value the control work against the proliferation of illegal tourist guides.
Thus, the agents of the tourist patrol have contacted and identified since its commissioning, in September 2018, 75 tourist guides, of which five did not have the proper authorization to practice the profession, as regulated by the Tourism Law of the Region of Murcia of 2013.
The interventions before this illegal practice were carried out in the surroundings of the Cathedral of Murcia and Trapería Street, where there is a greater influx of groups of visitors who hire guided tour services.
During 2019, tourism agents served 246 foreign-speaking tourists to whom they provided information of various kinds, such as the location of the main monuments and other tourist attractions.
Also, 377 tourists required information about the city in Spanish, mostly citizens of Spanish-speaking countries.
The tourist patrol is made up of eight agents that have official accreditation in at least one foreign language and its area of activity includes the old town of Murcia, with special attention to the area between Cardenal Belluga square, Santo Domingo, Plaza del Romea and the adjacent streets of the urban center.
The presence of the Tourist Police of Murcia in the areas of greatest tourist influx has allowed to limit the illegal practice of tourist guides without a license, an intervention that the president of ASGUIMUR (Association of Tourist Guides of the Region of Murcia), Natalia Bustamante, considered very positive and that puts Murcia at the forefront in the fight against intrusion in the sector of tourist guides.
In the recent Ordinary General Assembly of the National Confederation of Tourist Guides (Cefapit), held from December 11 to 15 in Zamora, several associations were interested in the service offered by the Local Police, having been Murcia pioneer in preventing proliferation of tourist guides without a license, which has allowed us to control a situation that in other cities is seriously damaging the guides that do have official authorization.
The Department of Tourism has also highlighted the attention that the Tourist Police provides in the motorhome parking area located in the Thader shopping center and which records an important presence of foreign tourists for much of the year.
