Ecologists in Action has addressed the City of Murcia denouncing the episodes of overcoming these last days in the municipality of Murcia, measured by the San Basilio station.
Tuesday, December 31: Daily measured concentration 73 micrograms / m3 of PM10
Wednesday, January 1: Daily measured concentration 62 micrograms / m3 of PM10
These improvements have led to the activation of the protocol planned for episodes of contamination (BORM, nº 277, 11/30/2018) that only raises recommendations but no effective and preventive measures.
Thus, the activation of the protocol occurs several times during the last months until the climate of the anticyclonic situation changes.
The activation only involves specific recommendations and messages on the traffic light panels in the city accesses to warn drivers of contamination.
Also, it is recommended that you do not voluntarily access the center by car, use deterrent parking lots and drivers who do so efficiently.
It is recommended to reduce physical exercise and outdoor activities, travel on foot, by bicycle and public transport, turn off electrical appliances that are not used and lower the temperature of the heaters.
For Ecologists in Action, a protocol with recommendations only becomes a scarcely useful instrument to address the complex problem of air pollution
Ecologists demand more active measures from the City of Murcia in coordination with the General Directorate of the Environment to truly address the problem of air pollution, mostly the result of excessive motor vehicle traffic.
It is necessary that serious and effective measures be taken, both in the prevention of such episodes, and in the measures to be taken to reduce their impact and duration.
As an example of measures to reduce and shorten episodes such as these days are the restriction of the most polluting vehicles to the urban environment, the free public transport and extension of their schedules, the express prohibition of any activity that involves the increase of pollution such as agricultural burns, earthworks, exhaustive control of industrial estates, etc.
The main routes of action to reduce air pollution include: the reduction of motorized traffic, reducing the need for mobility with a proximity urban planning and promoting public transport (especially electric) and non-motorized means such as the bicycle or pedestrian traffic;
the ecological reconversion of interurban transport from the road to an improved and socially accessible conventional railway;
savings and energy efficiency;
the recovery of stimuli for renewable electricity generation, replacing thermoelectric plants from fossil fuels;
and the widespread adoption of the best available industrial techniques for the reduction of air pollution.
In addition, Ecologists in Action calls for new air quality improvement strategies with quality objectives based on the limit values of the WHO guidelines and a specific plan for tropospheric ozone control, with sufficient financing for its development and with measures preventive, information and public awareness.
