Chemistry and Biology students of the UMU know the largest renewable energy center in Spain (19/12/2019)

The ODSesiones project of the University of Murcia (UMU), framed in the project to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has organized this week a guided tour of the Solar Platform of Almeria, considered the largest energy center in Spain In particular, solar thermal energy concentration.

Nearly 50 students from the Faculties of Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Sciences of the UMU and students of the IES El Carmen de Murcia have participated in didactic workshops and have expanded their knowledge about the latest research in the field of solar thermal energy concentration.

This type of clean energy is obtained from direct sunlight, so it is necessary to use lenses to concentrate the sun's rays on a specific point.

The light turns into heat and drives a turbine, so that electricity is produced.

Temperatures fluctuate between 400 and 2,000 degrees Celsius.

Since climate change is produced mainly by the burning of fossil fuels, it is necessary to advocate other types of energy.

In this case, the source of sunlight is inexhaustible and, since it does not produce pollutant emissions, it is an alternative to supply the demand for electricity in large areas of the planet, particularly in the Spanish southeast.

The visit has been coordinated by Mariano Alarcón, professor of the UMU Chemical faculty and researcher responsible for the Energy Engineering and Innovation research group.Through this visit it is intended to encourage training through more experimental and visual environments as well as the integral development of students as future professionals in the energy sector.

This research center, located in the Almeria desert of Tabernas, receives dozens of visits from European, American, North African and Latin American universities and research centers every year, while also hosting numerous research projects in areas such as energy thermoelectric solar, solar desalination or water detoxification also using solar energy.

After organizing thematic activities on the 'End of poverty' (SDG 1), 'Zero hunger' (SDG 2), 'Health and Welfare' (SDG 3), 'Quality education' (SDG 4), 'Gender equality '(SDG 5),' Clean water and sanitation '(SDG 6) this December, SDG has dedicated it to' Affordable and non-polluting energy '(SDG 7).

ODSesiones will resume its agenda in February 2020 through 'Decent work and economic growth' (SDG 8), whose activities will be held at the Faculty of Labor Sciences of the Espinardo Campus and the ISEN university center attached to the UMU.
