Murcia, European leader in selective collection with the implementation of the fifth container (10/12/2019)

The neighborhood of La Flota is the first to incorporate the new brown lid container, intended exclusively for organic waste.

Together with Kalundborg (Denmark), the capital of the Region is the first European city to launch this initiative that marks a new milestone in selective collection and recycling.

José Ballesta: "A third of the food produced in the world ends up in the trash. We have a responsibility to use resources effectively and find new ways to use waste."

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, today presented the new selective collection system that is incorporated into the municipality: the fifth container Brown lid, specifically intended for organic waste.

Together with Kalundborg (Denmark), the capital of the Region is the first city to launch this initiative that marks a new milestone in selective collection and recycling;

a pilot test that will be launched at the end of February 2020 in the neighborhood of La Flota, the food markets and the bars and restaurants of the downtown area to reach, during the next months, the whole municipality.

José Ballesta said that "Murcia has been chosen by the European Union to pioneer the ValueWaste project, a community program to convert urban organic waste into strategic economic resources."

The project has 17 partners of 6 different nationalities, among which the City of Murcia and the City of Kalundborg (Denmark), municipalities in which the pilot projects are carried out.

Murcia has the support of Ferrovial Services for the implementation of good practice at the local level and the project is coordinated by the Technological Center of the Environment of the Region of Murcia (Cetenma).

'Murcia adds one': at the head of the green revolution

With 'Murcia sum one', the city is at the head of the green revolution in Europe, changing the recycling model and leading one of the EU's most ambitious bets on the environment.

“We are living an environmental revolution in which sustainability is a condition of the future.

A third of the food produced in the world ends up in the trash.

We have a responsibility to use resources effectively, find new ways to use waste and put technology and research at the service of sustainability, â€said José Ballesta.

'Clean Air' strategy

Among the advantages offered by this project, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the improvement of air quality or the optimization of the process of collection, treatment and recycling of waste that can generate methane and other harmful derivatives is highlighted.

All this will contribute to create a more sustainable city moving towards the circular economy.

This initiative is part of the strategy 'Clean Air' of the City of Murcia, which includes actions such as the free pruning service to the huertanos to avoid agricultural burns, the gradual renewal of the bus fleet and acquisition of new vehicles fueled by biofuels , hybrid or electric, creation of dissuasive car parks, periodic checks of the emissions of gases from vehicles in circulation, together with the Ecological Patrol of the Local Police (more than 1,000 vehicles per year), pedestrianization of 252,000 m2 and 4 areas of restricted traffic (267 streets), the Greenway, new network of bike lanes, strategy of the Electric Vehicle, 2030 Forest Plan and sustainable lighting, among other measures.

2,200 liters of capacity for organic waste

These new containers that will be launched in the last weeks of February next year, will have a capacity of 2,200 liters and will incorporate a lid that closes it completely to avoid odors.

They will be placed in the streets next to the gray container and in all the supply places.

Neighbors who request it have a small domestic container designed for this type of waste free of charge, which should always be used with compostable bags.

In the case of bars and restaurants, due to the volume they generate, a specific collection service will be launched.

Organic residues of fruit and vegetables, remains of cooked food, eggshells, shellfish and nuts, coffee grounds and infusions or corks, matches and sawdust are considered organic waste.

This new brown lid container completes the Murcia recycling system that already has a yellow container for lightweight plastic, metal and briks containers, a blue container for paper and cardboard, the green igloo for glass and clean ecopoints for oils , light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, batteries and batteries, empty cans of varnish or paint, small electronic scrap, x-rays, clothing and toys, etc.

10 million European global budget

This project proposes solutions to problems such as the management of bio-waste generated in the municipality, as well as the search for alternative sources for human and animal feed.

Derived from the above, a cutting-edge technology in waste management will be developed, creating new jobs and opening a change in awareness and legislation regarding food and waste in the European Union.

The project has a global budget of € 10,863,876, being funded by the Horizon 2020 Program at € 8,375,422.

For the 2018 call, only two H2020 projects were financed at European level by the Directorate General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission, being the one with the highest budget in Murcia.

Awareness

Over the next few months, an information campaign will be developed that will reach all restaurants, plazas and neighbors through a patrol of informants that will visit all the protagonists of this project to inform about its use, location and all the details.

In addition, information channels such as the microsite murciasumauno.es, the usual services such as www.murciaciudadsostenible.es and social networks will be opened.
