The portrait of José Orihuela, former rector of the University of Murcia, has been incorporated today to the gallery of rectors of the UMU, in an act in which friends, family and numerous members of the university center have been present, including all former Rectors: José Antonio Lozano, Juan Monreal, Juan Roca, José Ballesta, José Antonio Cobacho, as well as the current one, José Luján and the honoree José Orihuela himself.
The artist María Garres, who studied Fine Arts at the University of Murcia, thanked former rector Orihuela for the opportunity to be present at the UMU Rectors gallery and allow "a student of Fine Arts to be with the great artists that compose it ".
He said that "painting a portrait is much more than trying to make the work resemble the model, it is psychological, it is to represent in a work all the achievements achieved by the model, and at the same time represent the bearing, experience, knowing how to be of the person, in this case the former rector Orihuela ".
The former rector, who dedicated his speech to "the most important person in my existence, to the love of my life, to my wife Isabel Cánovas", "with whom I want to spend the time I have left," said the painting "In a certain way sense, part of an icon of the Institution and without a doubt of myself, including this face. It is the one there is. I have no other, "he said.
Orihuela affirmed, referring to his term as rector: "I now smile at the thought of how little I could centrifuge from my center of gravity", to add that "There were those who thought that I was defeated, but the truth is that I left in peace and especially with a deep feeling of freedom, because I took the aftertaste of not having let myself be corrupted and the satisfaction of fulfilling my word of not jumping into politics, where offers have not been lacking. "
He affirmed that "It is not easy to govern a place as ungovernable as the public university. We university students think too much and suffer for free," and he added, referring to Rector Luján: "I know that you will do well and that in the end you will also be here, in front of your picture, with the pride and calm of duty fulfilled. "
The former rector finally had words of thanks for the author of the painting, María Garres, winner of the contest made among the students of the UMU, for "this magnificent work of art for a poor model who, nevertheless, recognizes the geometric and gestural similarities . It's almost reminiscent of my mirror. "
The event was closed by Rector José Luján, who affirmed that "Today the University of Murcia honors itself by incorporating the portrait of its last rector", and thanked Orihuela for the effort he made "for four years serving each and every one one of the people who make up this wonderful community that is the University of Murcia, contributing with his team the best of themselves for the good of the University of Murcia, which is the best thing that can be done in this life.
