Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, a date that should serve not only for reflection by all of society, but also for the renewal of efforts by all political and social institutions , to fight against this violation of rights.
Coinciding with this date, the socialist councilor Teresa Franco wanted to express her full support for the fight against sexist violence.
"Violence against women is structural and historical, in addition to the first cause of premature death among women. It is a problem as real as it is serious and that from politics we must stop. It is our obligation to combat it in order to build the society we want and we deserve to be, "says Councilwoman Franco.
12.5% ​​of women over 16 years of age have suffered gender violence at some time in their lives, representing 2.5 million women in Spain.
In addition, a total of 1,026 women have been killed in Spain by their partners or ex-partners since 2003 and in what we have been in 2019, 52 women have been killed and 41 minors have been orphaned because of sexist violence.
"Evidently worrying data against which we have to fight generating the necessary mechanisms to offer fast and effective answers," explains Franco.

This has been demonstrated by the PSOE Government, which in a period of less than two years, has implemented 82% of the measures of the State Pact against Gender Violence. This is what that we have to imitate and not the inaction of the previous Government of the PP that almost a year after the approval of the State Pact against Gender Violence had not yet started. "
For all the above, the socialist councilor will take a motion to the next plenary session in order to urge the government team to treat this problem as a political priority.
"I will require the Ballesta team to reinforce the measures contained in the State Pact in the field of gender violence, to maintain a firm commitment to equality and to ensure that there are adequate economic resources for the application of the instruments of struggle against this type of violence, "says the mayor Teresa Franco.
"In addition, we think it is very important that there is zero tolerance and that any group or political position that denies the existence of gender-based violence or does not support policies aimed at its eradication be completely rejected," says Franco.
"We also urge the support of organizations and groups of women who have worked for the evolution and implementation of women's rights and that the law for equality between women and men of the Region of Murcia, "concludes Franco.
