Park and Garden technicians carry out various treatments for the elimination of this lepidoptera from the green areas of the municipality, such as endotherapy.
The technicians inject into the trunk of the specimen a substance not harmful to the tree, which is transmitted by the sap to the caterpillars, causing their elimination and allowing to eradicate this pest.
"The processionary is totally eradicated from the parks and gardens of the municipality of Murcia thanks to the work of the technicians of this service who have been applying these treatments for years successfully," said the councilor.
The City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, directed by Jos Guilln, has carried out the elimination of the well-known caterpillar of the 'processionary' (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) in the more than 2,500 pines of Municipal green areas.
It is a lepidoptera, whose name comes from the particular way of moving in an Indian row that, when it is caterpillar and has reached maturity, descends from the trees to find a place to bury itself and leave in the form of a butterfly.
"From the session we act in a preventive manner in the presence of this insect and as a priority to prevent its proliferation and inconvenience to citizens," said Councilman Jos Guilln.
Its treatment is carried out by two methods: one preventive based on endotherapy and spraying and another curative, which develops when the processionary bags have already appeared in the pines.
The head of Parks and Gardens underlines the endotherapy treatments in pines are giving very good results.
“This process, developed by the company STV / Acta, consists of a small incision in the trunk of the specimen where a non-harmful substance is injected into the tree, which is transmitted through the sap to the caterpillars, causing their elimination and allowing eradication this pest of the pines ”, explains the mayor.
"The processionary is totally eradicated from the parks and gardens of the municipality of Murcia thanks to the work of the technicians of this service that have been applying these treatments for years successfully," said the councilor.
The actions in the municipal green areas always follow a scheduled calendar, which begins in October and is carried out by two people for about three weeks.
After this, a team of two people is responsible for solving the possible incidents that appear in specimens, in the more than 2,500 existing pines, which occur in Murcia and districts.
