The Cañada Hermosa treatment center opens a new solar sludge drying plant (20/11/2019)

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, inaugurated this morning the new sludge solar drying plant, located in the Cañada Hermosa treatment center, managed by Ferrovial Servicios.

In this new facility, sludges from wastewater treatment plants in the Region are treated.

Its main objective is to achieve a reduction of the mass between 60 and 80%, thus obtaining a biologically more stable product, with minimal water content, no smell and suitable for improving the subsequent composting process.

The councilor has indicated that "this plant represents a clear commitment to renewable energy, since it works with solar energy, also taking advantage of the residual heat of biogas engines."

Once deposited the mud, the operators extend it by means of loaders shovels throughout each chamber to a height of about 30 centimeters.

From here, the operation is fully controlled by sensors where, depending on the temperature and humidity, both internal and external, they start the ventilation system.

By means of an autonomous robot, the material is moved to dissipate its humidity and, once it has reached the optimum humidity level, it is transferred to the composting plant to continue the process.

Its four drying tunnels allow to treat 20,000 tons of mud per year in its 4,700m2 and its capacity is expected to double during this year.

This planned expansion means doubling this amount reaching eight drying tunnels, which will allow to treat up to 40,000 tons of mud per year.

The budget in this second phase amounts to 2,232,422 euros.

More than 19,000 tons in 2018

In 2017, this facility treated 18,044 tons, a figure that amounted to 19,032 tons in 2018. As of October 30, 2019, 16,955 tons have been treated.

In this second phase of solar drying a boiler will be used to improve the drying of sludge providing heat.

This boiler will be supplied with solid fuel recovered at the Cañada Hermosa treatment center from the collection of bulky and industrial waste, taking advantage of all the calorific value of previously treated waste and minimizing rejection with a safe deposit of rejection.
