Aguas de Murcia joins the AEAS awareness campaign against toilet wipes (19/11/2019)

Aguas Murcia joins the campaign launched by the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS) under the name 'Do not feed the sewer monster'.

It is an awareness campaign against the elimination of wet wipes by the toilet, which is an environmental and economic problem.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, visited this morning the central collector of the municipality.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among Murcia to make proper use of sanitation systems and explain products that are not suitable for disposal in the toilet.

This seeks to avoid the costly obstructions caused at home by economic and environmental wipes, sewerage networks, pumping equipment and sewage treatment plants.

The accession of Aguas de Murcia is also the result of the commitment to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN within the 2030 Agenda. One of these objectives, specifically SDG 6 'Access to water and sanitation', has goals specific in this matter.

In this way we want to warn that all wipes and personal hygiene products must be clearly labeled and discarded in the trash or garbage and reminds companies that manufacture wipes and personal hygiene products the duty to provide consumers with clear information and concise about disposal methods.

In the municipality of Murcia, almost 390,000 kilograms of wipes are removed annually, with a management cost for the city of 600,000 euros.

These products cause more than 770 berths per year, and there is an estimate of the reduction of the useful life of the pumps of approximately 50%.

It is not the first time that Aguas de Murcia is committed to this objective.

Its educational campaign 'The 3P: Pipi, Popó, Papel', whose sole objective was to teach sustainable habits in relation to personal hygiene products, reached more than 10,000 students from different educational centers of the municipality throughout the 2018- school year 2019.

The central collector, a giant city sewer

The central collector of the municipality was inaugurated in 2000 and collects the sewage and rainwater from the urban area of Murcia and the northwest districts (from Javalí Nuevo to Cabezo de Torres), which represents 228,000 inhabitants and an area of 50 km2, that is, the area equivalent to 10,000 soccer fields, with 60% of the wastewater generated in Murcia, around 50,000 m3 / day

Annually moves 22 Hm3, the equivalent of a complete transfer and the volume of its pitcher is 3,000 m3, that is, approximately 1 Olympic pool

In the last rains, it collected 600,000 m3, 0.60 Hm3, 6 days of drinking water consumption in the city of Murcia.

For each liter per square meter (l / m2) of rain fallen in the city, 16,000 m3 of water is collected in this pumping equivalent to 6 Olympic swimming pools

The pumping consists of 10 pumps of 175 kW of power.

The power of each pump is equivalent to the power of a Jaguar XF, or a BMW M3.

Each pump evacuates 4,200 m3 / hour, that is, it would empty an Olympic pool in 35 minutes.

The bombs are at a depth of 14 meters, about 5 stories deep

The overall consumption of the installation is 1.1 GW-hour, with the equivalent consumption of 110 homes.

Since 2013, its energy consumption has been reduced to 330,000 kWh / year, that is, the annual consumption of 34 Spanish households.
