More than 3,000 students will learn to buy, cook and eat this school year through the workshops of the 'Classroom of Health, Senses and Sustainability' program, which takes place in the Municipal Supply Square of Verónica.
The Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, and the Councilor for Commerce, Markets and Public Roads, Juan Fernando Hernández, presented this morning the program of this space dedicated to health and quality of life through the promotion of the Mediterranean diet which takes place in the 'Raimundo González Frutos Gastronomic Culture Classroom' of the Verónica Municipal Food Market.
"Students learn with initiatives such as these habits of eating and healthy living, also recognizing our local heritage, as well as the sensory dimension and perceptions to learn to value different flavors and textures," said Councilor Felipe Coello during his visit to this space, where there was a group of schoolchildren from El Raal developing the activity.
“Another of the purposes of these workshops is to promote a healthy shopping model from homes and schools.
And it is the students themselves who carry out the activities in a real environment located on the first floor of the building, ”said Juan Fernando Hernández.
The activity is aimed at organized groups of 25-30 participants, in different modalities according to population groups vulnerable to nutritional risks: 'A menu with senses', aimed at Primary Education students, between 5 and 12 years old;
'Cooking without my parents', aimed at secondary school students, between 12 and 18 years old;
'Together: healthy for you, healthy for two', intended for families in the reproductive stage and with children in their first 1,000 days;
and workshops for chronic patients, general population and vulnerable groups.
The workshops, aimed at both the school and adult population, take place between 90 and 120 minutes and are directed by a cook and a dietitian-nutritionist, in addition to the collaboration of teachers or leaders of the groups involved.
School children receive a workshop on food in their centers and then attend the market to carry out the activity.
Thus, the program has teaching materials such as cookbooks, a program guide and a student notebook as reinforcement for the educational center.
These materials have included a new feeding guide called 'The plate of healthy eating.
Healthy for you and for the environment ', which proposes a balance between natural, healthy and sustainable food for the environment.
More than 15,000 participants since 2013
Since its launch in 2013, about 15,000 participants have been trained with this program, mostly students from schools, but also chronic patients and groups of families with young children.
Participation has increased by 75% in the last 3 years, and in 2018 56 educational centers in the municipality participated with more than 3,000 students attending.
Almost 60% of the participants claim to have reflected on their diet and that of their family, as well as having made changes because they perceive healthy eating as fun, creative and satisfying.
35% tried foods they had never eaten and incorporated them into their usual diet and 34% improved their breakfast.
