Murcia will host the Murcia International Organ Cycle 2019 for the last two months of the year. In this fifth edition, the Merklin Association of Friends of the Organ of the Region of Murcia- AMAORM- and the City of Murcia want to pay tribute to the figure of Joseph Merklin , master organero who built the organ of the Cathedral of Murcia in 1857, on the 200th anniversary of his birth.
The program will take place from November 7 to December 5 and will offer 6 concerts and the screening of a documentary.
All concerts, which will take place in the organ of the Cathedral, will be held at 8.30 pm and will have free access.
The Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesus Pacheco, has indicated that "few cities in Spain offer a cycle of such quality as this in which the organ is the protagonist. In Murcia we can listen to national virtuosos and internationals of this instrument" .
The cycle will open next Thursday, November 7, Paolo Oreni, one of the most prominent improvisers of today, offering more than 100 concerts a year in the most important auditoriums and churches around the world.
Born in Treviglio in 1979, Paolo Oreni began his musical organ studies when he was just 11 years old.
In 2000 he obtained a scholarship, and moved to Luxembourg, where in 2002, he won First Prize in the International Competition "Prix Interrégional-Diplôme de Concert".
An important step in his training was his encounter with Jean Guillou during several master classes followed at the Church of St. Eustache in Paris and Tonhalle in Zurich.
He has performed as a soloist at the La Scala theater in Milan, and with various chamber groups and symphony orchestras in Italy, France and Switzerland.
He is currently developing an intense activity either as a soloist or with an orchestra, performing in the most important musical stages of Italy, France, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Finland, Albania, Poland, Israel, Russia and China.
On November 13, the Film Library will host the screening of 'Tin, wood and air', a documentary feature film about the world of the organ directed and produced by Álvaro Menéndez Granda in which fourteen professionals from the national and international organizational scene are shown for the purpose to deepen the particularities of the instrument, its technique and its construction
On November 14 it will be the turn of Pablo Márquez and Atsuko Takano, components of the duo 'Concertante a quattro'.
Both interpreters, trained in different international conservatories in Japan, France, Germany and the Netherlands, offer an interesting vision of the repertoire for a four-handed key in its various variants.
Since its formation in 2010, the duo has participated in several international festivals, highlighting its tours of Spain, Holland, Switzerland and Japan.
These concerts include his participation in the Organ Battles of the Cathedral of Toledo, which involves four organists simultaneously, interpreting and improvising in seven of the eleven organs that the cathedral owns.
Since 2014 they have participated in the four editions made.
Joao Vaz will star in the concert on November 21.
The Portuguese develops an intense international career as a concert performer, teacher in interpretation courses or as a member of the jury of various international competitions.
He dedicates a large part of his activity to the study and dissemination of Portuguese organ music, recording an important number of CDs in historical instruments.
He currently teaches at the Higher School of Music in Lisbon and is artistic director of several organizational events in Portugal such as the Organ Festival of Madeira and the series of concerts in the Basilica of Mafra and in the historical organ of the Church of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon, where he has been a regular organist since 1997.
On November 28, Silvia Márquez will be in charge of sounding the organ.
Born in Zaragoza, she won the First Prize in the Permanent Competition of Musical Youth 1996 in the specialties of Clave and Organ, an award to which various awards happen: Special Jury Prize for the best historical interpretation and Honorable Mention in the International Contest "Spring of Prague "1999, Bruges Key International Competition (Belgium) 2001, and I International Organ Biennial of Granada 2002.
Member of the Baroque Orchestra of the European Union 2001, the most important focus is her work as director of the ancient music group La Tempestad.
Currently she is a key professor at the Royal Superior Conservatory of Music in Madrid.
The Murcia Alfonso Guillamón de los Reyes will close this edition, Extraordinary End of Career Award in the specialty of Piano by the Manuel Massotti Littel Superior Conservatory of Music of Murcia.
Senior Organ Professor at the Conservatory of Music of Valencia, for 14 years he has directed the Autumn and Spring Music Cycles of the Espín de Lorca Cultural Center, as well as the Santa Cecilia Memorial Recitals of the San Fulgencio Theological Institute of Murcia, the Pianistic Festivals of the Spa of La Encarnación de Los Alcázares and the Concerts of chamber and piano music concerts of the San Antonio Catholic University.
He is currently Canon, Prefect of Sacred Music and Head Organist of the Murcia Cathedral
