Under the theme of 'How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia', the City Council has awarded three innovative proposals within the Climathon 2019: an itinerant Training Center, an App 2.0 and special waste containers.
This initiative to improve the management of waste from the Huerta is part of the 'Clean Air' strategy of the City of Murcia.
José Ballesta: "The great challenge is not only to take care of and recognize our environment, but to activate a future project. In Murcia we firmly believe in a city project that prioritizes respect for the natural environment."
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, today presented the three winning proposals of Climathon 2019, the largest global climate change event that is held simultaneously in the main cities around the world, and that in this edition has been dedicated to 'How to improve waste management in the Huerta de Murcia'.
Specifically, the best rated proposals have been a Training Center on Sustainable Agriculture for the delivery of courses between different social groups, a waste processing system using light transport structures for later sale and an App 2.0 for intelligent access from farmers to waste crushers;
"Three proposals that will be included in the next municipal initiatives for the preservation and valorization of the Garden," said the mayor.
This initiative to improve the management of waste from the Huerta is part of the 'Clean Air' strategy of the City of Murcia.
“One of the biggest challenges we face in this 21st century is environmental sustainability.
The great challenge is not only to care for and recognize our environment, but to activate a future project.
In Murcia we firmly believe in a city project in which respect for the natural environment is a fundamental pillar of future opportunities and, in this sense, the protection of the Huerta, an ecological and cultural heritage of all Murcia is a priority †highlighted José Ballesta.
Clean Air
The Clean Air strategy includes actions such as the free pruning service to the huertanos to avoid agricultural burns, the gradual renewal of the bus fleet and the acquisition of new vehicles powered by biofuels, hybrids or electric vehicles, the creation of deterrent parking lots, periodic checks of Gas emissions from vehicles in circulation, together with the Ecological Patrol of the Local Police (more than 1,000 vehicles per year), pedestrianization of 252,000 m2 and 4 restricted traffic areas (267 streets), the Greenway, new lane network bike, electric vehicle strategy, 2030 Forest Plan and sustainable lighting, among other measures.
Thanks to Climathon, new steps have been taken in the search for solutions to the problem of waste management in the Huerta, in areas such as the treatment and recovery of organic waste, plastics, water and emissions, the solutions of integral waste management to Large-scale and small-scale zero waste, soil restoration, the development of innovative / intelligent systems, sustainable agriculture and the creation of new business models.
Three winning ideas
Traveling Training Center.
The classroom in the Garden:
Proposal of itinerant center to train the huertanos in their districts.
The objective is to eliminate the burning of stubble and herbaceous, promote good practices in the garden and contribute to a more sustainable garden in Murcia.
The objective is to promote good practices in agriculture, nurture links between farmers, contribute to a more sustainable Murcia orchard and a healthier environment for all Murcia.
The itinerant center is installed in a known point of the hamlet, near the farmers so that they do not have to move, and there training is given on the damages of the agricultural burns, the available solutions and good practices.
The team is composed of Jesús Martínez Orenes, Pedro García Trenza, Lucie Chenet and Rosario Cámara.
The team had the support of the Official College of Agricultural Engineers of the Region of Murcia, whose members participated as experts and mentors.
App 2.0 Waste Management of the Garden in one click:
Application that allows a planning of resources necessary for the huertanos access, for example, to the service of crushing of pruning remains, currently offered by the City of Murcia in collaboration with ASAJA.
With the information collected, routes can be designed to minimize the carbon footprint of the necessary machinery.
In addition, data acquisition allows statistics to be developed around which strategic actions can be planned for the protection, conservation and recovery of the Huerta de Murcia.
The team consists of Sonia Tovar, Raquel Sabater, Dr. Antonio J. Jara, Iris Cuevas and Alfonso Aguera.
Compensation for your waste:
An action that is based on the processing of waste through special containers with an internal mechanical system to chop, weigh and validate the delivery of certain waste from the garden with value.
This idea proposes to motivate the citizen who delivers the segregated waste with a ticket with a value per kg of material, which will serve as a discount purchase with the Murcia retail trade, generating a true circular economy.
The team is made up of Carmen Serna Fernández (Ing. Agrónomo), Francisco Javier Fernández Burgada (CEO), Ana Alicia Díaz Garre and Laura Cáceres Salvador.

The City of Murcia now has a good number of proposals developed by the attendees to try to solve the proposed challenge on improving the management of waste from the Huerta de Murcia.
The implementation of these solutions will serve to reduce the generation of waste and provide value to them, reduce the impact of agricultural activities and improve the local environment, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change.
The jury has been composed of Francisco Carpe (Chief of the Environment Service, City of Murcia), Gines Luengo Gil (Dean of the Official College of Biologists of the Region of Murcia), MªCarmen Hernández (Director of GERM, City of Murcia), Herminio Picazo (Ecopatrimonio) and Pepe Leal (President of the Association of Friends of the Huerta “Azacayaâ€).
