The UMU incorporates a new technique for the diagnosis of urethral pathology, awarded by the SERAM (31/10/2019)

The researcher at the University of Murcia Juan de Dios Berná Mestre has described a new technique for the diagnosis of anomalies in the male urethra, whose most frequent pathology is narrowness or stenosis, which is caused by multiple causes: prostatic hypertrophy, trauma, infection , previous surgery, etc.

The article on the new technique applied to urethral ultrasound was published in the European Radiology magazine and describes a leading methodology worldwide that will allow replacing the traditional test, since it is less bothersome for the patient and has greater efficacy.

"We are very satisfied because the technique has been applied for years in various hospitals both nationally and internationally," says the researcher.

This work has been awarded the 2019 national prize of the Spanish Radiology Foundation / SERAM.

"For me it is a great recognition at the academic level and it is also a way of financing for new research," adds Berná Mestre.

A more effective and less painful and invasive technique

The new technique, called "Clamp Method", is simple and consists of a probe attached to a ring and connected to a drip system (with radiological contrast), so that pressing the ring behind the glans prevents the exit of the contrast to the outside.

"This method involves an assessment of the state of the urethra in a less invasive way and allows diagnosing the pathology of the entire urethra and bladder," explains the UMU researcher.

"The application of the new technique to ultrasound has allowed us to detect urethral alterations that previously went unnoticed," warns the researcher, who explains that thanks to the incorporation of the Clamp Method to urethral ultrasound, lesions and abnormalities impossible to detect have been visualized. using the traditional technique: urethrography (x-rays).

The conventional urethrography technique employs a Foley catheter and by inflating a balloon (incorporated into the catheter) inside the glans, the contrast is exited outside, however this causes pain to the patient, and sometimes bleeding and complications , hence the urethrography is deprecated and the urethra ultrasound is not extended.

"The Clamp Method allows urethrography and urethral ultrasound to be performed in a non-painful and comfortable way for both the specialist and the patient," concludes Berná Mestre.
