18.8% of new entrepreneurial projects have a high degree of innovation in the product or service they offer
Almost five percent of the adult population of the Region of Murcia (4.8%) has been involved during 2018 in entrepreneurial projects in an initial phase;
a figure that represents an increase of 6.7% compared to 2017, although it is still below the average in Spain, which stands at 6.4% of the population.
This is one of the main conclusions of the thirteenth edition of the GEM (Global Entrepreneurship Monitor) study, prepared by researchers from the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Murcia and which is sponsored by the Institute of Development and Bankia.
The results of the study on entrepreneurial activity were presented this Wednesday at the Ministry of Business, Industry and Portavocía, in an act in which the rector of the UMU, José Luján;
the counselor, Ana Martínez Vidal;
the rector of the UMU;
and Olga García, territorial director of Bankia.
With regard to the intention of starting a business of its own in the next three years, 7.2% of respondents express their interest in starting this activity.
Those responsible for the study determine that this figure, which reflects a slow rebound, is related to the improvement of the economy in recent years and the greater ease of finding a job for someone else.
The GEM-Region of Murcia Report also fixes its focus on consolidated entrepreneurs and notes that during 2018 they grew by 22.4%;
assuming 7.1% of the population.
This data improves the 5.8% obtained in the 2017 report and that maintains the growth trend of the last three years.
The average in Spain of entrenched entrepreneurs is 6.2 percent.
Researchers have also analyzed business abandonments produced during 2018 and the rate stands at 1.2%, a figure equal to that of the previous year.
The report detects that 39.5% of dropouts are due to activity transfers.
The predominant motivation to undertake in the Region of Murcia in 2018 is still to take advantage of an identified business opportunity (68.7%), consolidating the growth trend of these initiatives that began in 2016. The rate of entrepreneurship by opportunity has passed from 2.9% in 2017 to 3.1% in 2018, which represents an increase of 13.8%.
On the contrary, the rate of entrepreneurship by necessity has remained stable with a value of 1.3%.
With regard to the type of entrepreneurial projects that are launched, the data reflects that a clear majority of them are born with a small business size (in terms of self-employment without more employees than themselves), mostly concentrated in service sectors (especially in the trade that serves the final consumer), with a modest innovative orientation and with lower expectations of business growth compared to those expressed in the 2017 edition.
The degree of novelty of the products and services offered by the new businesses improves and it should be noted that 18.8% of entrepreneurs in the initial phase claim to offer a "completely innovative" product or service.
Once again, consolidated entrepreneurs are the least likely to incorporate more recent technologies.
Regarding the technological level of the sector, the participation of entrepreneurial projects that use a medium or high technological base is lower, both in initial and consolidated phases.
The rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, said that "the GEM report is a reference study and very useful for researchers, professors, companies and public administrations. The challenge of the usefulness of research is in the transfer of knowledge and this project is an example of this. We give back to society what it gives us. We generate value through scientific knowledge. "
The entrepreneur's profile
The GEM-Region of Murcia report has also analyzed the profile of entrepreneurs in the Community and the data obtained reflects that in 2018 those who have undertaken are around 42 years old and that those who intend to do so and are potential entrepreneurs have about 36 years.
The average age of the consolidated entrepreneurs is set at 47.7 years.
It is mostly men;
these being 57.1% compared to 42.9% of women.
The educational level tends to be medium-low, maintaining the tendency of previous years, while being reduced the percentage of initiatives led by people with university studies up to 34.8%, although the predisposition to entrepreneurship is higher in this Last collective
Entrepreneurs mostly claim that they have specific training to undertake (58.3% of them) and have an average income level.
Financing
As regards the financing of nascent entrepreneurial initiatives in 2018, it is observed that the average seed capital of the initiatives amounted to 42,515 euros;
a capital greater than necessary in 2016 (34,227 euros) and less than what they needed in 2017 (58,024 euros), seed capital that, without a doubt, is related to the breadth of the initiatives.
The GEM Report also indicates that the entrepreneurial initiatives of the Region of Murcia have been financed significantly with the savings of the entrepreneurs themselves reaching an average figure of 23,550 euros, above the 11,901 euros of 2017;
while the average seed capital has been reduced.
Values, perceptions and entrepreneurial skills
Regarding the perception of opportunities to undertake, 25% of the population between 18 and 64 years of age believes that they see opportunities to undertake, while in 2017 this percentage amounted to 33.5%.
The fact that goes up is that of people who claim to have sufficient knowledge and skills to undertake;
which goes from 42.1% to 47.2%.
The percentage reaches 83.6% when it comes to the population involved, data that can be interpreted as positive in the regional context, being above the average of Spain and the European Union.
The fear of failure as an obstacle to undertake at the level of the population as a whole remains practically stable in 2018, finding that there is 46% of the regional population that has it;
This figure is reduced to 31% among the population most involved in entrepreneurial processes.
A fact that the study also reveals is that 50.8% of the regional population has the perception that entrepreneurship is a good professional option, placing us in values lower than those of the whole of Spain and much lower than those of the whole of the Union European
The main obstacles to undertaking financial support and government policies have been identified;
behind them are government programs and social and cultural norms.
In parallel, among the factors that suppose for the entrepreneurs a support to the creation of companies in the Region of Murcia, stand out the governmental programs and the transfer of R&D;
They are followed by the state of the labor market and education and training.
