The Director General of Cultural Assets has signed the resolution declaring “Assets Listed for their cultural relevance” these two unique elements of Murcia's hydraulic heritage.
The protection includes the historic Malecon Azud, which fed both mills, a mill assembly of undoubted historical, hydraulic and landscape value.
Huermur requested the protection of the whole under the Heritage Law to ensure its future conservation, as well as to achieve the recovery and restoration of both mills, for which it will urge the City of Murcia to act immediately at the Alamos mill .
The Association for the Conservation of the Huerta and the Patrimony of Murcia (Huermur) has managed to complete the protection file as cataloged goods of the mills of the Alamos and San Francisco, as well as of the Malecon dam, in the city of Murcia .
The conservation entity has had access to the resolution of the Director General of Cultural Property, which has signed the document that completes the file and certifies the protection as assets cataloged by cultural relevance of this heritage, after the corresponding procedure that was initiated at the behest of Huermur.
For the association, "it is a success that a protection file is completed, such as that of the mills of Los Alamos and San Francisco, in the city of Murcia, despite the poor state of preservation of the first of these", as well as that "The Azud of the Malecon is completely protected, a unique work of centennial hydraulic engineering preserved in a large urban center such as that of our city of Murcia, in the Segura riverbed".
Huermur congratulates himself because he has achieved complete protection for this set of mills and blue, given the background of the numerous files that had been expiring at the General Directorate of Cultural Property in recent years, "with successive expiration of protection files and ' reincoations' of them, which have been eternalizing a procedure that is appraised and designed in the Law of Cultural Heritage so that it is carried out in time and form, without so many delays.
The association requested the protection of the whole of the mills of San Francisco and Los Alamos, as well as of the Malecon azud, highlighting its importance in the city of Murcia and the Segura river, highlighting its conservation as a legacy of great importance, to ensure its future conservation
Likewise, the entity has stressed that “with this statement, we are advancing in our requirement for recovery and restoration of both mills, so we are going to urge the City of Murcia to intervene immediately in the Los Alamos mill, where the garbage and weeds for too long, damaging the mill structures and weakening its walls and construction. ”
Finally, the conservation association stresses that “hopefully this statement marks a change of direction in the General Directorate of Cultural Property, and that it continues to complete all the protection files that have accumulated in its Historical Heritage Service during the last years, in many cases finding no reason to postpone initiations, procedures and final declarations of protection ”.
Data of interest on the now protected set of the protection declaration:
“After a long history of more than four centuries, the public works carried out during the 18th century in the city of Murcia under the government of the Count of Floridablanca, granted the city a status of modernity and prosperity according to the Enlightenment century .
Among these works was the remodeling of the San Benito neighborhood and the Arenal area of San Francisco, a place frequently flooded by the floodwaters of the river and produced great damage to the azud and the mills that rose in the area ”.
"On the other hand, the Malecon Azud is a unique work of engineering of the eighteenth century and works as a witness of the mark left by the previously existing in the area."
“The mills of San Francisco, Los Alamos and Azud del Malecón enjoy uniqueness, authenticity and typological value, since in the city of Murcia only 3 mills located on the Segura River are preserved and these are dated in the 18th century while retaining the sources of information about its construction.
In turn, the group, have landscape interest, memorial and are considered a milestone in the urban area of the city of Murcia ”.
