Two teachers and a graduate student from the Faculty of Optics and Optometry at the University of Murcia have been in Senegal since October 13 to collaborate with the international cooperation project of the NGO Azul en Acción, which aims to help improve health visual of the population of Mbour.
The dean of the Faculty, Eloy Villegas;
Vice-Dean Caridad Galindo and student Luis Ordoñez will be until October 26 in the African country working towards this end as part of the team of 40 professionals from all over Spain;
among which there are ophthalmologists, opticians, anesthesiologists and nurses.
The objective of this campaign is to improve the visual health of the Senegalese population through direct health care and the training of local staff.
It is estimated that during these thirteen days about 3800 consultations will be carried out, which will result in 450 surgeries to people with visual disabilities.
In addition, eye exams will be made, pharmacological treatments will be prescribed and 2000 corrective and sunscreen glasses will be delivered.
It is also planned to visit five schools for the early detection of visual pathologies and refractive problems in the child population, reviewing around 700 girls and boys.
All these actions will be the largest ophthalmological and optometric campaign ever conducted in countries with low social development index.
Last January, the Faculty of Optics and Optometry and the NGO Azul en Acción signed an agreement for collaboration in the volunteer actions they carry out.
Azul en Acción was born in Murcia in 2000, intervenes in international development cooperation projects and, in 2007, specialized in its interventions in the field of ophthalmology and optics.
