Francisco Miguel Pujante Hernández, from Alcantarilla and Alfonso del Moral Sánchez, from Murcia, have been the winners of the painting contest called by the University of Murcia to make the portraits of the two Republican rectors who ruled the center's destinations between 1936 and 1939
Pujante Hernández, graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Murcia and currently a student of the doctoral program of the same specialty, has been chosen to paint the portrait of Laureano Sánchez Gallego, son of a family of farmers and farmer as his parents, who attended high school with 32 years, then having a meteoric career that led him to graduate in Law, read the doctoral thesis and be Professor of Law in seven years, to later occupy the positions of Dean, Secretary of the Faculty and Vice Chancellor of the University of Murcia between 1917 and 1932, being appointed Rector between October 1936 and November 1937, replacing the hitherto Rector José Loustau.
On the other hand, Alfonso del Moral Sánchez, graduated in Law by the UMU in 2015 and master in law, will be in charge of painting the portrait of the Rector Manuel Pérez Xambó, who was Professor of Law at the University of Murcia and held the position of Rector between November 1937 and March 1939.
There is the circumstance that the portrait of Alfonso del Moral will be the second work of this author that is incorporated into the Gallery of Rectors of the University of Murcia, since in 2016 he was already in charge of the portrait of José Antonio Cobacho.
With the incorporation of these two rectors, who had been practically forgotten for decades, the Gallery of Rectors of the University of Murcia, in the Convalescence building, will be completed for the first time in its history, since, until relatively recent times, they were not Andrés Baquero and Vicente Llovera, the first two Royal Commissioners, charge equivalent to the Rector of the University of Murcia.
