The Platform in Defense of the Cultural Heritage of Murcia and the "Friends of the Botanist" collective transmit to the City Council the need to build a party venue where to move all the massive events that are degrading this historic garden.
For several years the Platform in Defense of the Cultural Heritage of Murcia and "Friends of the Botanist" have been denouncing the improper use of the emblematic Botanical Garden of the Malecon.
A garden that is within the protection environment of the Paseo del Malecón as a good of cultural interest, and was founded in 1835 under the direction of the Chair of Agriculture and the Provincial Institute of Second Teaching of Murcia, currently IES Francisco Cascales.
Unfortunately this green space that is part of the cultural and landscape identity of Murcia has been taken as if it were a party venue to celebrate mass events, such as the orchards of the September Fair, the Moors and Christians camping, the barracks of the Spring festivities, Christmas attractions, concerts of the Malecon Nights and the placement of booths for the different exhibitions that take place throughout the year.
All these activities are exerting enormous pressure that is incompatible with the conservation of a botanical garden, even the City Council has been expanding the land and pavement spaces to accommodate all activities, seriously violating the protection indicated in the DATE and in the Cultural Heritage Law of the Region of Murcia being an environment of cultural interest.
To this we must add the inconvenience that all these events cause to the neighbors who live nearby, with music and noise until the wee hours of the morning, as well as the lack of security due to the accumulation of large numbers of people in a space so small and the intense traffic that is generated throughout the area where there is little parking space.
Therefore, neighbors and representatives of the Platform in Defense of the Cultural Heritage of Murcia and "Friends of the Botanist" have met with the president of the Central-Western District Board, Diego Aviles, to convey a series of proposals that have as objective to improve and enhance the environmental, cultural and didactic use of the Botanical Garden.
For these groups it is essential to build a fairground and parties where all mass celebrations can be centralized with guarantees of space, services and security, as well as many cities and towns.
This petition is backed by a motion that was passed unanimously in the previous legislature.
Once the fairground is built, the garden should be restored from a historical and botanical point of view, so that it recovers its old function and Murcia can once again have a scientific garden for the enjoyment of citizenship and that includes activities Educational
Nor do they explain how it has been possible to build a kiosk inside the garden, which is currently a bar-restaurant and occupies two beds with a covered terrace, so they will request a review of the license and the specifications.
In the coming months, the Platform, the "Amigos del Botánico" collective, associations and neighbors will continue meetings with the responsible councilors and with the groups that make up the City Council so that, finally, the Botanical Garden will once again be an emblematic place such and as Murcia deserves.
