The University of Murcia has hosted this Thursday the presentation of the 'Innovation Ecosystem of the Region of Murcia';
a research project, directed by the Professor of Marketing and Market Research of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the UMU José Luis Munuera.
This project brings together 25 people researchers and workers from companies and public administrations - with the aim of providing solutions that improve innovation and competitiveness of the economy of the Region of Murcia.
The event, which has taken place in the auditorium of the Faculty of Economics and Business, has been attended by representatives of the business sector of the Region and the public sector, who have heard the analysis of the current reality of the Autonomous Community regarding innovation and the recommendations that experts have made for the future;
They have been working on their analysis for months to begin to propose solutions.
The rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, has been in charge of opening the event with an intervention valuing the work done.
"These 25 people have been generous and have joined with the only reward to help the future of the Region of Murcia," said Luján, who thanked the participants in the project "the work done and the one to come" .
Professor José Luis Munera has focused his intervention on drawing attention to the importance that the strong investment in innovation has on the economy, giving as an example to large companies such as Apple, Google or Amazon, and how this investment has made a difference in the market compared to other multinationals.
This logic of investment in innovation to achieve greater wealth and economic momentum is what Munuera and the group he leads want to transfer to the regional economy.
"We are not satisfied with the current situation, we want to modify this situation," said the UMU professor.
According to the research carried out for this project, the current scenario in the Region is marked by an investment in R & D & I in relation to the gross domestic product much lower than the national average, despite the fact that the gap is gradually being reduced.
Another of the great features highlighted during the presentation is the staff dedicated to innovation.
In the Region of Murcia, 70% of the people who work in R & D & I are in universities, around 22% in companies and the rest in the public sector;
while in the national average only 45% of the staff is in universities, 15% in the public sector and 40% work from the private sector.
These data are the starting point of an analysis of innovation in the Region of Murcia that offers many opportunities for improvement.
With a mainly formed small and medium-sized business fabric, the alliance with universities is the key to improving innovation.
Currently, only 36% of the companies that work in knowledge transfer with regional universities are from the Region, according to the conclusions of the study presented this morning at UMU.
The existence of research groups of excellence in the Region and a greater awareness of companies of the need for innovation to enhance growth are the great opportunities that have stood out.
"All those who are part of the current system in the Region of Murcia work well; but there is no ecosystem, lack of collaboration and union to improve levels of competitiveness. Working together will improve";
Munuera has said to finish the act.
The professor stressed that a better scenario is possible for the Region.
