Corvera has more than 1,000 new trees, thanks to the agreement between the City of Murcia and the Morus Alba association.
This reforestation action, framed within the 2030 Forestry Strategy, began last year in area 27 next to the Corvera power station, where more than one thousand specimens of endemic Mediterranean vegetation have been planted.
The peculiarity of this initiative is that all plants are genetically resistant to the harsh climatic conditions of the Region of Murcia, since they belong to the only nursery (Muzale in Abanilla) of the Region that works with endemic seeds collected from the area.
The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, explained that "it was the students of CEIBs Isabel Bellvis of the community and the social promotion group El Candil de Totana who worked together with the Morus Alba association, in the plantation of these trees, creating a new environmental and recreational area for all the neighbors ".
Thanks to the Forestry Strategy 2030, the City of Murcia intends to duplicate the trees in public areas in the municipality as a whole and reach 200,000 copies in 2030, of which 80% will be planted in districts.
These 100,000 new copies will be distributed through different strategic projects:
Murcia Río II: it will host 50% of the new plantations, 50,000 trees that will extend along 27 km of the channel and 14 districts, in the new large metropolitan parks, areas of stay and meanders.
Parks and Gardens: they will receive 20% of the plantations.
Reforestation in areas of mount and orchard: 10%.
Greenways: 10%.
Alignments in districts: 10% (these are trees at street level that are planted in urban streets and avenues).
The plantations of the Urban Forestry Strategy 2030 respond to five strategic lines:
1) Mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.
A tree absorbs up to 150kg of CO2 per year, they are excellent filters for urban pollutants and small particles, and regulate the flow of water and improve its quality.
2) Shadow creation and temperature improvement.
The strategic placement of trees in urban areas can lower the temperature between 2 and 8 degrees.
Trees around buildings reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and save between 20 and 50% of heating.
3) Promote greater urban biodiversity of species in the municipality.
Trees provide habitat, food and protection to plants and animals, produce edible fruits by local wildlife and birds, as well as interesting flowers for bees and other pollinators.
4) Health improvement.
Not only because of its filtration effects of contaminating particles and combating climate change, since it is proven that spending time near trees reduces blood pressure and stress, and improves physical and mental health.
5) Landscaping and beautification of the city and districts.
Parks and gardens and urban landscaping make 'City brand', constitute a tourist claim and can increase the value of the surrounding properties up to 20%.
The new plantations will prioritize the native varieties, which adapt to the climate, water scarcity and thermal characteristics of the municipality, with special preference to those of deciduous since they improve global warming and nourish and fertilize the soil, and a bet clear by the tree-lined alignment, the specimens at street level that provide shade to both pedestrians and buildings in urban settings.
