Murcia and Genoa, cities united by a common history and twinned by a future project (26/09/2019)

The Plenary today unanimously approved the twinning agreement of the city of Murcia with that of Genoa (Italy), thus strengthening the historical ties of more than nine centuries between the two cities.

“This twinning implies the establishment of a stable framework of cooperation, in its broadest sense,†explains the Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.

The mayor explains that during the last 15 years both cities have been working together in various fields of interest.

On the one hand, bilateral meetings have been developed within the framework of institutional relations.

Thus, work meetings have taken place between technicians and elected officials developed in both cities;

the exchange of delegations of journalists;

the reception of soccer players of the Genoa Football Club team during their visit to Murcia;

or the participation of Murcia in the prestigious fair "Euroflora 2018", with the floral exhibition, 'Spring begins in Murcia'.

These meetings culminated with the institutional visit last year of the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, to the city of Genoa, which was signed by both mayors in 'agreement of intentions' to continue with the collaboration that had been developing.

“But these meetings have not been limited to the field of public administration.

There cannot be a twinning without the active participation of citizens, universities and other entities.

That is why there is a line of work for the promotion of Erasmus student mobility between the University of Murcia and Genoa;

personalized contact with Genoese students in Murcia or support for the University of Murcia in the studies that are being carried out on the origins of the Genoese presence in Murcia â€, explains Mercedes Bernabé.

The councilor visited the room dedicated to Genoese origins in Murcia at the end of August of the exhibition 'King Wolf, the legacy of Ibn Mardanis', in the Archaeological Museum.

Also, just a few days ago, the head of the Urban Agenda received in her office Erasmus students from Genoa who have chosen Murcia to make their stay within the European program.

In the field of joint international promotion through work in transnational networks, Genoa and Murcia co-lead the European digital citizenship working group, jointly participate in the Brand City and international relations working group and in the forums environment, cooperation, economy, knowledge society, mobility, social affairs and culture.

Another joint line of work focuses on the implementation of new municipal policies through the joint management of EU-funded projects.

Currently Murcia and Genoa share programs in the areas of sustainable mobility, energy efficiency, citizen participation in the revitalization of neighborhoods (Urban DNA) and the city brand.

A common story

"Murcia and Genoa share in addition to the Mediterranean culture that frames its climate, its landscape, its gastronomic and ethnographic culture, as well as deep and historical ties prior to those traditionally documented especially from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries," explains the Councilor for Agenda Urban and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.

These relations are linked to the years 1147 and 1172, during the Islamic period of the reign of Ibn Mardanis, the Wolf King.

Also, in the Municipal and Historical Archive of Murcia the commercial relations between Murcia and Genoa have been verified since the twelfth century.
